The travel niche can be very profitable, but it is also extremely competitive so pick a niche that you really love because you are going to have to write a lot of content to get to the top of Google. I monetize my sites with AdSense, hotel bookings and business advertising.
AdSense often pays well on hotels, flights, and car hire, but if you have the traffic to make a good income from AdSense you'll make even more from affiliate links. Local advertising can pay well if you get your page impressions up or can demonstrate your
SEO is working. Offline advertisers will pay and keep paying if they get traffic or bookings and it's a nice form of residual income.
If you have a large expat community in your area then market to them as well.
