    Asense CTR Advice Wanted...

    Hi,
Had a delima that is kicking my rear-end...high traffic day on my bball site (5 x my daily norm so far), but the CTR is down to around .3%. In the last month it has dropped from 1.5%ish to .5-.7 and now .3 today. No change in the layout of the site recently.

Site is collegehoopsvideo.com and am running the Google and YPN adsense plugin. Just changed the ad positioning to the random position, had been running in the top left for posts.

If anyone has advice on how to modify the ads to attempt to bump the CTR up some it is appreciated.
    Cheers,
    James

Those symptoms usually means that your traffic source changed. Most often this is because you got a sudden burst of traffic from Slashdot/Digg/StumbleUpon/Reddit/etc...

    Those folks are terrible clickers.

Ah... now that may be a horse of a different color.

Has your percentages of traffic from each source type changed recently?

I would configure the AdSense plugin to display only 336x280 ad blocks.

I would bump the maximum number of ads per post from 1 to 2.

I would also try using a background color for the ads that matches the background color in your content. I would also try that on the 160x600 wide skyscraper ad in your sidebar.

I would also try changing the URL color to #000000.

As per usual, you will have to measure the results of each change on your site.

Also, I just linked to you from My Basketball Layouts.

Thanks for the help Will. My traffic source for the "bump" day was rivals.com, so that helps explain the Digg-like effect.

I'll start testing out the changes you recommended and see how that goes. Will get a link back to you when I'm on there later as well.
    Cheers,
    James

As Will suggested start using the 336x280 ad blocks. On the post use one float left and the other centered on the bottom.

I would also put the 336x280 ad on the home page in the fist post and put an ad at the botton of the page.

Additionally put a link unit under the menu and the bottom of the page.
