Question about General blog and AdSense

My girlfriend has a small PR2 blog that is very general and she wants to start getting serious about making an AdSense income from it.

She is doing some keyword research, finding long tails where she can rank in the first few pages but we're noticing that the AdSense ads don't update very often, maybe once a week meaning that the front page always shows irrelevant ads for the top (latest) entry.

My question is in two parts, is there any way of getting AdSense to crawl the blog more often, or should she configure the blog to only show one entry on the front page?

  2. I think that the Google AdSense Mediabot will crawl more often when the number of page views increases, but I don't know if anyone has ever tested that.

I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

I figured that I could look into this more by looking at how often Mediabot is crawling some of my high-traffic pages.

On my high-traffic pages, Mediabot visits appear to average just over one per day.

That wouldn't make much sense to me. The front page would still be dynamic, and the ads would still be irrelevant. I think that a stronger move would be not to display ads on the homepage. The homepage probably won't get much traffic anyway as after all, your friend will likely be promoting/targeting traffic for the inner-pages (which would, I assume, be static - meaning, that after the first update, all ads on these pages would be relevant).

There is a distinct possibility of that being correct. She's a graphic designer and for the last couple of years the site hasn't been doing much, mostly the posts have been personal. It started out well, offering free html templates and she got some good traffic from those but her focus is changing, she'd prefer to produce clipart and icon sets now. But, and this is where it gets tricky, she still wants her blog to be general enough to cover her other interests.

My gut feel after reading threads here is that she needs to delete all the personal posts, perhaps over a period of a few months, and replace them with new posts about clipart, icons, vector drawings etc.

    Your thoughts?

Possibly separate the two, across multiple domains, but I don't see why she needs to get rid of them. There's nothing wrong with a personal blog, but it's probably not ideal to promote your personal blog to the imagery field.

Yeah, you're right there is nothing wrong personal blogs, but her intention is to make money from AdSense, yet at the same time there she has the feeling her blog shouldn't just be about clipart because as a person she is more than her work.

It's a tough call and I guess once the site reaches certain volume of art type posts the occasional personal post won't hurt. Reading over Will's reply, and your own thoughts, it seems the biggest problem she's facing is the lack of traffic, I think it's in the region of a hundred visitors per day.

I swear I read a post here somewhere, made by Will, saying never to do so.

I also agree with Charles. I'm currently running 7 blogs and the home pages do not display AdSense. Each home page displays links to the 10 most recent posts.

The linking structure is so strong with blogs that new posts get indexed very quickly. I frequently see some of my targeted posts in top 10 positions in Google within a day.

I do think it is important to keep a blog focused on a specific theme. If you want to make money with a blog, don't dilute it with unrelated ramblings.
