Tips to earn more with AdSense

First, sorry for my bad English, I'm Spanish.

I offer my experience (not much) with Adsense. Certainly many (if not all) of these tips, you shall know but I would like to share.

    Tip 1.
Putting AdSense on the top of the website. I personally have not had luck with Adsense in the sidebar or at the end of the content. My experience tells me that where they yield more ads is the beginning of the post, just below the title and content before.

    Tip 2.
Do not give many options to visitors. If for example, when you enter in the website, just option click on an advertisement and not a category or another link, gives more performance. Most users are lazy to use the scroll bar of browsers.

    Tip 3.
The best colors. To me the best color for ads is blue for links #0000FF, white background color #FFFFFF and black for the text and the URL of the ad #000000.

    Tip 4.
Pages with few links, more clicks than others with more links. For example, in blogs where posts are not showing the categories, these had a higher CTR.

    Tip 5.
Do not put pictures in posts. On blogs where there are no pictures in posts, these have higher CTR.

    Tip 6.
Less ad units, higher eCPM but lower CTR. It is true that if you put only one ad are better paid, but also the CTR is much less.

And these are some of the advice I can give in my experience with AdSense. I hope you find them useful.

    Thanks,
    Sergio.

Google will sometimes complain about ads that are placed immediately below article titles.

I've had lousy experience with sidebar ads, and worse with header ads.

I've seen surprisingly good results with 336x280's at the end of articles.

Hmmm... I think I'm going to be testing this, en masse, in the coming months.

I would advice you to place your ads in visible places, but not in places that could be confused with content, that will get you clicks from people who are interested and not accidental clicks that will get you smart priced.

Why would google complain about the ads being right below the title?

    I didn't think that was a rule?

    Hi.

If I am reading this right your saying if I get rid of the 468x60 at the top and place a 336x280 at the bottom I would make more money?

You are allowed three ads right if I get rid of the side bar where would you place the other two?

Please check first site in sig what do you suggest?

    Muchas Gracias Sergio,

It's always great to read AdSense tips from someone who has experimented, and then come to conclusions.

Your tip about no photos, and keeping the links to a minimum are very useful. Actually one of my websites, the "Aprender Inglés" link in my signature does very well and it only has a single AdSense link unit and no photographs. I've been thinking of adding photos to the pages, and putting the breadcrumb trail above the content, but now I might try something different.

    Un saludo, Andy

My experience is also that 336*280 at the top get the most CTR - but I've removed most of them from one high traffic site as an experiment.

Interestingly what I now do is just the opposite to you, Sergio.

I have pictures, where the top of the first picture is usually just visible above the fold. There are further pictures further down if it's a longer article, becoming visible before the first picture leaves the top of the screen.

I then have a 336*280 at the bottom of the article, probably no other adsense on the page (sometimes in the sidebar).

The intention is to 'drag' visitors down the article to the ad, because they want to look at the next picture, while also stopping the page from looking like a MFA page.

The goal is to attract natural links (easier when there are no adsense ads above the fold) and return visitors, so my focus is on increasing income by increasing visitors (via better SERPS positions from the links attracted) than by increasing CTR. Initial results are quite good, but it's a long-term experiment.

I have never had much success with 728*90 banners at the top of a page, header ads, sidebar ads or link units although I use all of them to some extent when I don't have a better idea. A site-search box in the header sometimes does OK (search results have a very high CTR on the ads, often 15%+), usually better than a banner ad in the same position.

Interesting thoughts DickTracy, I'd love to know how that works for you.

I've had good success with the 728 wide banner inside the content, sometimes just above the fold, and other times way below the fold.

Some of the pages that get good results have an image at the top, and then more images down the page, although I don't know if the images are aligned on the edge of the fold like you describe.

Other times the pages that get good results from a 728 in the content are a table of data, such as restaurants or hotels.

    Thanks all for your replies.

I haven't a lot of experince with AdSense, but I like playing with ad formats and positions.

I only use 336x280 ad format.

    Thanks,
    Sergio.

I tend to use my three ads like this:
    • 336x280 near the top of the article
    • 336x280 at the bottom of the article
    • 160x600 in the sidebar
