Containing the Politics and Religion Forum

I don't believe that we can live without a P&R forum, because if we did the P&R threads would just appear everywhere else.

I also don't believe that we can effectively moderate the P&R forum. We've all seen what kind of disasters that leads to -- aside from the incredible amount of wasted effort in trying to make people behave according to our own rules.

    So what can we do?

I've made a few changes that may help reduce the importance of the P&R forum:

    • Posts in the P&R forum do not count towards user post count totals.
    • Posts in the P&R forum are not indexed in vBulletin's internal search engine.
    • Posts from the P&R forum do not show up when you click the "New Posts" link on the navbar. (Hack description is here.)

I don't expect any of these to have a significant impact. In fact, I don't believe that anything we do will have a major impact. People have been killing people over politics and religion since before the beginning of recorded history. This is not a problem we're going to solve with a few vBulletin settings and some forum rules.

So relax, sit back, and just be glad that the people you're arguing with are half a world away.

Fwiw after spending way the hell too much time in senseless P&R arguments for years I'd laid off all P&R forums since 2003 before someone coaxed me back into the one at DP (and the guy that coaxed me in... we dont talk anymore... lol). I dont expect to frequent yours... so you''re safe on one count. It's addicting and just creates problems. I'm in here to learn stuff I dont know, answer questions where I DO know, and generally get along.

It is fun, that's why it's addictive.

The trouble is, at least for me personally, is that it takes up so much time that it makes it difficult for me to get real stuff done.

It's not hard to not have a P&R forum. If people talk about P&R just ban or infract them. I know you probably don't want to be a ban nazi like they are at a lot of other forums, but what the hell does P&R have to do with a webmaster forum?
I don't know any other way.

If you're going to have a P&R forum then you should pretty much let people say what they want as long as they're not inciting violence or threatening people, because P&R is probably hard to moderate without letting personal political bias of the mods influence the decisions of what gets moderated.

    That's the way I'm thinking.

Not having P and R posts show up under new posts is definitely a good idea. Once you see some titles, your attention is caught and it can definitely sidetrack you, even if youre here to learn.

And the forum is still there for when you feel like jumping into the mosh pit.

THANK YOU, those will help me from "seeing" the threads to begin with! YAAAA, now I can get some work done.

It is funny how the islamist started sending in teams of people to attack in the DP P&R sections. All the banned for duplicate accounts and guys like menji trying to have jihad on everyone there.
