    Are groups private?

Is it possible to setup a private group that requires membership to read, and most importantly, keeps crawlers and auditors out? I'm thinking more of being able to ask openly for diggs, reddits, stumbles, link sales etc.

vBulletin's Social Groups are documented here.

The social groups permissions appear to only affect writing permissions, not reading permissions.

It feels like that new feature of vBulletin isn't quite cooked yet.

I can create private forums, but those can't use Social Groups to define permissions. Forum permissions use vBulletin Usergroups, not vBulletin Social Groups. vBulletin Usergroups are documented here.

Hmmm... We could create a "Blackhat" subforum, but I don't think it would be possible for me to delegate membership management. I think I would have to add each member by hand.

Heck, there's probably a vBulletin mod that solves all these issues.

We're going out for the evening. I'll take a deeper look tomorrow morning.

    This is looking bizarrely difficult.

    • Social Groups won't work, because they aren't private.
    • Private Forums won't work, because they use Usergroup membership instead of Social Group membership.
    • I am not finding a vBulletin mod that makes this any better.

I've posted a couple of messages over at vBulletin.com. Hopefully someone there will be able to come up with a solution.

At least you're trying, that much I appreciate, and it's one of the things that makes NB so much better than other forums.

I got pretty jazzed about the idea from an interesting angle.

A number of members have asked about our creating a private forum for a limited subset of the membership. Those suggestions didn't excite me because I'm working really hard to make all of NB great for all our members. I really don't have any reserve time or energy to pour into a private subforum.

But... if members could create their own private subforums... that would be cool!

I may post it as a paid mod request over at vBulletin.org.

    Resolved!

What we want to do is possible, with Usergroups (not Social Groups).

We can now create private usergroups and assign Forum Leaders who will control membership to those usergroups. Those usergroups can have private forums which can only be read by approved members of the group.

    This could be really cool!

Unfortunately, it's all poorly documented. I'm going to have to write something up.

Will just thinking might be a dumb idea might will toss it out there. In VB you can have a private section for just the mods is that right? Is it possible to add another level Like owner, admin, mod, user and a custom on that would work like a mod but with a different title and no extra privileges like a mod other then the private area access?

Not sure if that made any sense but it made sense sort of when thinking

Ha! It's too late! You're the Group Leader of my test group, "Adult Webmasters".

You can go to "User CP" and then "Group Membership" to approve members.

You can resign at any time, of course.

I think we're on the same wavelength.

Anyone can now request their own private subforum.

They will then become the "Group Leader" of the group connected to that subforum. They will be able to control membership of that group. Only group members will be able to view messages in the subforum.

Optionally, these private subforums can even be hidden so that even their names cannot be seen by non-members.

Well gee thanks! I don't have the time to check it out right now, but sometime tonight or tomorrow I will.

That sounds perfect, I'm sure the blackhat and adult subforums will both be setup that way!
