Yes -- definitely. Those "quick" rankings seldom last, but they can be awesome for taking advantage of sudden news stories.
Whilst blogs tend to rank faster, aged authority domains almost always win in the end.
The game is far from being over. There is no significant disadvantage to a contestant who starts next week.
To keep the contest "real", we have to allow whatever Google allows. In an SEO contest, "real" is more important than "fair" -- because Google certainly has no interest in fairness.
This is why we must allow exact match keyword domain names and multiple entries per contestant -- because Google does.
Now, if Google penalizes your entry down to page twenty of the SERPS... that means you did something not allowed.![]()
