But I don't understand Will, if I get #1 ranking.. on a good keyword, but from a well known website (think on squidoo, twitter) than it isn't SEO contest.. that website did the SEO for you, not yourself...

So I think that's not fair

Is it allowed that we make teams to enter contests.
Since some people will buy links, some have companies behind them, some have bunch of employes for link building
it would be great if we are allowed to team up with someone on forum and enter the contest as a team?

I think it is very obvious that it would be a team work. SEO of a site cannot be a one-man job. Main thing is mastermind after the planning and seo strategy should be yours. This is what I think. But your point is important too. Some people may have companies behind them. This is surely a loophole.

Sites on site optimization can be done by you only but off-site surely needs a team. If I take myself, I really can't write those many unique articles, blogs, directory submissions etc. etc. (even if I'm a copywriter myself). Have other core jobs too.

But as I said already; brain is yours, plan is yours, and you can have a team to execute it.

Just my humble opinion. We can think about it or I think Will must have already thought about it.

Contestants will have to post their URL's. In past SEO competitions, there was some difficulty in finding the winners.

SEO isn't fair. Google has not created a level playing field, and has no intention of doing so.

Team entries are common in SEO competitions.

Regardless of the answer on that (personally I'm more interested in testing some of my seo theories in real time, rather than chasing the prize moneys) I think this might have a big downside, because this would mean new people won't be able to join the contest - you'll lose lots of links you could've got if people were able to join up until the last moment. And considering contests get publicity while they are running I think this would actually rule out a large majority of potential participators. Even if it's a "short" 3 months.
That said I understand your reasoning as well, but maybe let people enter untill ~ a month after the start
