Option 1 - Don't count ANY post outside the Webmastering Area.
Option 2 - Hide post counts completely. I hate badges and crowns.
Option 2 i think would work the best imo. I also think that posts shouldn't count in social groups and so on.

Option 2 would be really bad for the forum and would definitely discourage a lot of users, especially newbies. From their point of view it would be a giant mess with posts everywhere. They would not know who the regular members are etc and who to trust. You may not agree with this but seeing the post count is how quality/"know what they are talking about" members are identified.

Having the post count visible is just one of those things a forum MUST have. It is just like having a blog without any titles: just giant slabs of information everywhere that nobody knows what its talking about << you may get what I am saying here or you might not know wtf I'm talking about.

Essentially, having the post count visible is just what forums do. To take it away would be killing a part of the forum. People post on general chat section when they are bored and have no-where else on the forum to post (well atleast I do). Maybe if instead of complaining about general chat, we should just man up and start conversation in more important sections of the forum.

For people who don't like general chat, they can either:

    i) accept it for what it is and make the best of it.

    OR

ii) disable general chat in user CP so it is as if it does not exist.

I don't understand why people would complain so much about an issue like this unless they actually cared about post count themselves and did not like people running up post count in general chat. (I am not one of these people but do suspect a few myself But I have just accepted it and moved on.

    My solution:

Don't count general chat posts, for people who don't like general chat, disable general chat in the user CP so it is not visible when you click unread posts. It will be as if general chat does not exist. Therefore people who don't like general chat are happy.

For people who like posting in general chat, they will be happy because there won't be people complaining about how crap general chat is.

For people who like running up their post count in general chat, these are the only people that are affected in a negative way which is GOOD because that is not what NB is about, if they want to still do this, go over to DP so essentially this group is happy to.

Summing up, disable post counts in social groups + general chat and everyone is happy. If people are still unhappy after this then move up to the next level.

We should not automatically do the most extreme thing by disabling post counts. Ultimately, the decision is up to Will but I thought I would make my opinion clear before any decisions eventuate.

Yeah i do agree that they should at least not count the posts in gc. There are people who have more posts than me and they only post in GC and have only been here about 3 weeks

I have posts than you and I have only been here a short while- not that it means anything. It just means I spend more time here than you (im at uni what can you expect?) but I actually prefer posting in the main forums. I would think 80% of my posts are in the main forums.

IMO it is the matter of members interest/subject and his/her choice where to post.

Yes, you are correct. However, it is also out of the members interest to make NB the best webmaster forum on the net. Obviously, some members here dislike general chat because it seems spammy/useless or whatever reason. We are just trying to come up with a solution that will make everyone happy.

It would help is everybody gave not only their view about the subject but also the reasoning behind it. Without the reasoning behind it we will not be able to find a solution that suits everyone and if we do not find a solution that suits everyone, we wouldn't't be the best WM forum on the net.

The only solution would be to get rid of post counts all together instead of cherry picking. My perception of people that have high post counts in the main forum are scammers and cons. What you guy guys think are a badge of honor I think it is a person that needs to be avoided. I am a member at another forum and they have taken away post count in the General section and delete most post. They have also implemented a no follow tag on all posters other than mods and require a certain number of thanks and a high number of post before they remove the no-follow tag. Way to shrink a forum. They have created a forum that has become a party of a few.

If I spend money buying a service from Will or acquired something through his affiliate link it's because I trust him. I got to know him in the P&R at DP and not in the sections that you guys think are God All-mighty.

From what I have read from many of you guys, y' all have all of a sudden become full of yourselves and think that you add more value than the next person. Shenron I expected more from you. Well I'm sorry to inform you guys that it takes more than a few people to make up a successful web forum. You guys sound like a bunch of cry babies on the school ground whining that another member has more post count than you or that some member actually have fun. A webmaster forum is about learning, making money, and networking. The General section is great to take the edge off and actually network without wondering if the man is conning me.

    Regards, Homebizseo

Will has the highest post count here and that does not make him the biggest scammer and con

I think that someone selling a website with 0 iTrader and 1 post should be avoided. I don't want to click on the user profile every time I might be interested to buy a website or even to simply know how much a person has contributed to the forum.

That's what I don't want to happen to NB.

To me it is sounding that you believe that your post is more valuable than the rest of ours.

We are members of this forum and do not want to see it turn to crap. Will encourages members to speak up/make suggestions about the development of this forum and that is simply what we are doing here.

It is not about post counts. It is about the quality of the general chat forum. The only reason we are mentioning post counts so much is because we think by disabling them, it would increase the quality. If we were that self-centered about post counts then we would not want any changes so we could post as much crap as we can in the "guess who comes next thread" and those other crap threads.

For those of you who think post count is worthless, it is not. You should display it proudly because it is the contribution that you have had to the forum (similar to the number of thanks). It does not make that person any better than the next, it is just a simple way of showing contribution.

I was a member at WTF (Webmaster Forum), we had the exact same issue as this with crappy threads such as "guess who posts next" (there were heaps of them). However, NB has experienced nothing compared to WTF. These crappy threads had a few thousand posts each in them. You can imagine how fast it took to get up your post count. I contacted the admin and she decided to disable post counts in the general chat. WTF is really crap and spammy now. However, that was because of management/main moderator leaving etc, not from disabling post count in GC. Infact, I believe that GC significantly imporved during this time.

You forget I have got to know Will and respect him from the P&R section.

itraders don't mean anything to me.

Oh contrary. I am not the one cherry picking. Post counts should be eliminated altogether.

And that what I'm doing as well.

The other section have many crappy post as well. Read through the other sections.

I still am and I am proud to be a member there.

I don't think its crappy. That's just my opinion. There are many member there that I respect and enjoy corresponding with. If I'm not mistaken didn't you jet when your post count got adjusted?

Yeah my post count went from around 1500 --> 700 (everyone lost a lot of posts) I knew that was going to happen when I suggested the idea to Colleen. I must admit I posted A LOT in those crappy game threads until s) I realized that there were more important things I could spend my time on and b) posting quality posts on a forum and learning in webmaster-related discussion is better.

Thanks for expressing your views. Lets keep this in the form as a 'productive discussion' rather than turning into an argument

BTW: I only just remembered you from back at WTF
