Will you should take a look at V7n. It is a well run webmaster forum. I use to talk to the founder quite often. He wanted the General Chat and intro at the top to put new members at ease. He just sold the site for around 200 grand. Not bad

I am a member there but it never really grabbed my attention. I've heard that it's pretty much dead now anyway.

The former owner meant alot to V7n. The Owner also shared alot of industry secrets to me. His knowledge of SEO, community building and making money online was amazing. I learned more there than from Chow.

This brings up some very interesting points. m42 and I are both members at v7n. Here is my v7n profile and her v7n profile. John is also lurking here at NetBuilders. I believe his non-compete agreement with Lee prevents him from posting.

m42 and I also both members are John's new forum, Individualism. The three of us have similar, but not identical, views on a lot of issues.

All that being said, I have very few posts in v7n compared to the number of posts I have on DP.

One reason why is simply that there were more posts to respond to on DP. v7n was always smaller and there were very few competent webmasters posting in the "work" forums.

Another reason why I didn't post so much on v7n is because there were a couple of really annoying members there. One joined v7n after got banned from DP for red repping a bunch of people and signing the red reps with my name. He's a Super-Moderator at v7n. The other super annoying person was also a Moderator or Super-Moderator. Combined, their IQ's don't equal room temperature.

A third reason why I posted much more at DP was the Politics and Religion section. At v7n, the P&R threads were basically John arguing with these two retards. The DP P&R section was a lot more balanced, at least until the mods started the ridiculous new rules and applied them arbitrarily only to those people who disagreed with them. Of course, I am several hundred thousands of dollars poorer because of the time I wasted on DP's P&R forums.

    DP won and v7n lost:

    • DP Stats: Threads: 1,278,968, Posts: 10,840,923, Members: 287,952
    • v7 Stats: Threads: 119,464, Posts: 1,085,656, Members: 75,113

Of course, DP didn't really win and neither did v7n. I spent about an hour on DP today, looking for intelligent posts. I did not find a single intelligent post in the AdSense section. I found thousands of spam posts that have the net effect of driving people away. Almost no one is going to make the serious time investment required to contribute quality posts to a forum where everyone else is simply chatting. The mods do nothing about these posts, and yet they regularly ban serious forum contributors. DP losing, however, doesn't mean that v7n won. v7n has much of the same problem.

So what should we learn from this history? Here are my takeaways:

    • Posts from competent people attract competent people
    • Annoying members drive away desirable members
    • Annoying moderators really drive away desirable members
    • An active P&R forum can be really addictive -- but it's a serious drain on everything else in life
    • Neither DP nor v7n are meeting the mission goal of helping webmasters succeed
    • Low-quality posts push high-quality posts out of forums

When I look at our "work" forums, I see pretty decent quality. I just don't see the volume necessary to achieve critical mass.

We could increase volume tenfold in a short amount of time by emphasizing P&R and other general chat topics. But would that meet the mission goal of helping webmasters to succeed?

The far worse question is this: Would those posts drive away good posts from serious webmasters? Unfortunately, I think the answer is yes.

So how do we deal with that? How do we keep both groups happy?

I'm kicking a few ideas around in my head, but I'd love to hear some from you.

One of my ideas is to modify the "New Posts" tab to be a drop-down with multiple options:

    • New Webmaster Posts
    • New Marketplace Posts
    • New General Chat Posts
    • All New Posts

Another idea is to separate the forums onto two domains and figure out how to share the member databases somehow. The General Chat forums here would still show up on the FORUMHOME display and the Forum Jump menu, but they would simply be hyperlinks to the other domain. That's pretty drastic, but I am looking for a solution that scales well when we have fifty thousand active members.

What do you think? How can we meet our mission goal and keep everyone happy while doing it?

I think that's a recipe for disaster in any community.

Plus, not only do my posts not agree with each other, but portions of each post conflict with each other.

I just stepped out to get some dinner and do some thinking.

I made at least one serious logical error in my last post. I equated "annoying posts" with "general chat" -- because that's what has been annoying me this week. Of course, in a different week I could be annoyed at something totally different. Right now I would like to see more questions in the Webmaster forums. In a few weeks I may be agonizingly sick of questions in the Webmaster forums.

Another error was not differentiating clearly the value of "chat" between people who have made an emotional connection and between complete strangers. homebizseo and I made an emotional connection on the P&R forums, so if he were to say "I like Carta Blanca", it would create a completely different reaction in my mind than if some complete stranger with one post were to make the exact same comment.

Yet a third error was not differentiating between the various subforums. I was very annoyed today when browsing DP because the AdSense forum was full of general chat topics. And yet, if I had found those same topics in the General Chat forum at DP, I would have found many of them humorous.

Long ago, I recommended to the DP moderators that they let P&R become a mosh pit where no rules were enforced. Their pathetic attempts at enforcing pathetically stupid rules had no real effect other than alienating the forum members. So why bother? They weren't doing any good and they were wasting valuable time trying.

Conversely, the "work" forums at DP need some serious cleanup. They are terrible. It's just a bunch of people making "me too" posts to raise their post counts so that they can sell their forum signatures. And yet those threads appear to be unmoderated!

It seems reasonable to me (at the moment) that we should enforce very light moderation on the General Chat sections here and comparatively strict moderation on the Webmaster forums.

We should then implement tools to enable people to easily participate only in the forums in which they are interested. I am thinking specifically about the drop-down menu replacement for the "New Posts" tab.

With that 'seperate forums' thing, I would refer to a Dutch webmaster forum named SiteDeals. It has the 'Marktplaats (MarketPlace)' and the 'Forums', in the marketplace, all BST threads are shown, in the forums, there are other things shown (Stuff about Google, domains etc...)

A great thing there is (in the begin it looks stupid and ugly, but after a while it's great) is that there is a difference in color between the two tabs, also in topics. Because of that you can see in what type of 'tab' you're looking, if it's yellow, you're in the forums tab.. If it's the normal color (white;gray?) than your in the marketplace.

I really like Sitedeals and I also like NetBuilders, I guess we should have a few things they have and we don't But it's totally up to you ofcourse Will, see what you do with it

I like your this idea too. I think Post should not be counted in GC.. Even I like BST section but BST section is not active in NB..

Why you can see crap in GC of DP.

The main reason is, Allowing Use of free emails like yahoo, msn, gmail.. Everyone Can register. It's a Webmasters Forum. We need only webmasters. We must have an option like webmastersworld have. It required Website Email to register..

Well I m not saying that DP GC is full of crap. DP is really good forum for webmasters but there are many members who don't even know What Adsense is..

I have over 500 domains now, but I only use 'aquarezz[AT]hotmail[DOT]com' as email as I've been using it for a long time. I don't like it when they don't allow people that use these free services

So I hope NB won't do it this way, it could be a good idea yes, but I really hope Will won't do this
