    Random Threads Link

    When I am on a forum and have read pretty much everything I plan on reading for the day I often find I don't want to leave... when that happens I start looking for something else.

    • Fun & game type threads only go so far, and will not hit the spot when I am wanting to learn.
    • General Chat can often solve this... but again, not when I am here for webmastery.
    • NEW POSTS can often work, but again, I'm talking about after I've checked all the ones I plan on checking for the day.
    • Who's Online, this is a NIFTY way to find threads you've not found before, as there is always a bot or guest looking at something posted that you have missed.

    I've used all of those methods and have found some very interesting things I'd have missed otherwise, but still those methods all can get old...so I'd like to make a suggestion or two.

    I'd like to see a "random threads" link that pulls a series of random threads from (any) location on the forums.

    Bad suggestion, I know... but still, I'd like to see it. I've thought about such a thing for my own forum, but do not have the skills to make it happen, so I thought I'd share the idea in case there is anyone with such a know-how that also thinks it could be a worthy addition. Even if it just pulled up a single random thread... it could be interesting to see if such a thing could promote even further discussion, as even a three year old thread can still be a valuable resource.

    I also assume with the fancier titles such a thing would be a bit more difficult then if it were just a basic algorithm that could simply pull ## - #### and then weed out threads based on permissions... so I'm not even sure if it could be done.

    *shrug*

    Yes, and I love it! I plan on adding it to my site eventually... but for the most part, that is covered by the "New Posts" link, it's just a lot more fun

    I'm looking for something that can pull up old posts that potentially can be worthy of being revisited. With the nature of forums GREAT content can quickly get buried in the mess of sales threads and introductions. By weeding those out, some of those great threads can get new life... granted, the trouble would likely be in bumping up some out-dated content... but out-dating content does not happen as often as we think, as there are some gems out there worthy of bringing back.

    Again though, it's just a suggestion (and one that I want for my own forum, but heh, can't make myself, so I suggest it on all the other forums I go to in hopes they will release the mod so I can use it too ).

    Just paste this into a PHP file if you want

    PHP Code:
    <?php
    $topic
    rand(1,18170);
    echo
    "http://www.netbuilders.org/showthread.php?t='.$topic.'";
    ?>
    Of course change 18170 with however many topics there are (18170 being the ID of this post, so this script will work with all topics older than this one).

    Ah... but not every thread between 1 and 18170 still exists.

    IDK then just try again. Can't you just randomly select a TID from MySQL?

    I couldn't, but I'm sure that Nathan or Naweed could.

    Well, if they would, I'd click the link

    I'd also steal the code if they wouldn't mind

    And then... selecting a random row from the 'thread' table is just one challenge.

    Nathan pointed out that this would also show deleted threads and it occurred to me that it would also show threads in hidden and private forums. Code would need to be added which read the forum permissions for each visitor.

    "search permissions" could likely be applied to counter the issues with private forums.

    Though, I'm not sure how to deal with deleted thread numbers.

    Looking at the search function, a name or keyword is needed... so coding would certainly need to be done to counter that. And that's certainly beyond my know-how.

    It may be easier to pull up a random user, then simply list all of their posts (by not specifying threads started by the user, it lists all the threads they posted in, which could certainly be random enough). However, that runs the risk of people without post counts.
