Yes. I'm using a custom title right now. I'd prefer not to use my default title.

It'a nice decision to use both the custom titles and titles by default. I just updated my title.

It's just weird that other forums don't do the same.

I mean -- it's just bits. People are skimping on bits? What the heck? Bits are free!

It almost seems as if forum admins like to torment members just for fun.

The reason was given at one of the forum that the member would put any thing which may not be good.

But same could be said for avatar and sig links too. And if someone were to abuse it, then it could be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Not really. I know of several forums which do allow custom titles and several which don't. A lot of those which don't seem to want to keep things more structured, and that reflects in the way they moderate the forums as well; or they may use it as a reward once someone has reached a certain posting level.

In one forum I have run I did leave the option off simply as I rather themed the titles with a wrestling theme and wanted to keep that concurrent in the forum.

Frankly, I'd rather turn off ranks and post counts. I've never liked ranks and felt that high ranks and post counts were intimidating to newbies. Myself, I've never needed rank or post count to be intimidating.

You could say that I'm very rank on my own...
