When I first saw the 'portal' I didn't like it at all, I skipped fast to the forum instead...
Though we will see what the future brings, it might be more usefull than

I hate the fact that I don't see the default forum view now.

/me edits bookmarks to skip the new homepage.

First, thanks to everyone for all of the feedback -- both here and privately.

I should have explained more about what I am trying to achieve and I should have run vBAdvanced for much longer before testing it as the home page.

    vBAdvanced solves two requirements.

The first thing that vBAdvanced gives us is a way to store static content within the vBulletin framework. This will become important as we grow and develop even more really great premium content.

We already have a lot of great content, and members are having difficulty finding it. It's just not structured properly for easy access and step-by-step learning.

vBAdvanced can meet that requirement without being set as the communities front page.

The second thing that vBAdvanced gives us it the ability to highlight our premium content to new visitors and casual visitors. This is something that stickies just don't do well enough. This is something that pretty much requires a replacement of the home page.

If we look at what our members want, a lot of it is tutorials and training. We need a way to store that information in a structured manner and make it obviously available to new and casual members.

We're all webmasters here, and many of us are forum admins. What would you guys recommend to meet these two requirements?

I probably should have posted this message first. Sorry guys.

Looking at our top dozen competitors, here's what I see:

    1. DigitalPoint - CMS home
    2. SitePoint - CMS home
    3. WarriorForum - Default forum home with useless stats display
    4. NamePros - Nicely customized forum home
    5. Black Hat World - Nicely customized vBAdvanced
    6. DNForum - Customized forum home
    7. Cre8asite - CMS home
    8. Webmaster-Talk - Default forum home
    9. SEO.com - CMS home
    10. v7N - CMS home
    11. WickedFire - Default forum home
    12. Syndk8 - CMS home

I have no interest in creating a sales-oriented front page like DigitalPoint or SEO.com.

The models I'm looking at are SitePoint, Cre8asite, and v7n.

I am hoping to do this inside of vBulletin, instead of implementing an integration with a CMS software like Joomla. Those integrations never "feel" tight enough.

    What do you think?

Create a forums.netbuilders.org pointing to NetBuilders - We Build The Net and I'll be very happy.

Also, top logo and all "home" links should point there imho.

In response to massively negative feedback, I've done a rollback on this new feature.

vBAdvanced is still installed, because it may still be useful for the first requirement.

We still need a solution for the issue of highlighting quality content for new and casual members.

As it is today, there is little "obvious" that distinguishes us from "just another webmaster forum." We may be the best webmaster forum on the Internet, but we still have to do something to get that message in front of both prospective members and casual members.

    Three possible suggestions:

    1) I've seen, and I use such on my forum, a recent posts addon. That in and of itself is not the suggestion, but is there a way to either mod such an addon, or create one specifically for this, that would instead list sticky posts and other posts you want to highlight?

    2) When I ran a photography forum, and as such I was the most active member, I would put links in my own sig to posts I felt were important for newbies. You would, or whomever contributes their sigs, need to increase the number of allowed sig links, for that person only; of course, if possible.

    3) Place links to the sites in my sig on the front page. (of course, this would solve nothing, it would just benefit me)

When I had my webmaster forums (Web Goro before 1and1 screwed me over and stole my domain), I had a featured site / community section on the front page that seemed to be popular with users as a lot of them would keep trying to get on my home page. When the votes came in though it was a festival of newbies though, then again some of them stayed around cause they liked all the articles I had (which in a few weeks if I can connect my old hard drive I will be sure to share them here).
