The value is of course different, and some of the directories are even planning on going no-follow, but if you are good at writing and don't over spin, it's still effective.

I find article marketing very effective. I post an article to very high quality sites ONLY. I would then submit the article link to quality directories, social bookmarking sites, and social media sites.

The value can't be the same after Panda update, because the directories were "ranked down". Even if you publish top quality they are not indexed as high as they used to be.

Definitely article submission is the effective method to get results but it is little hard now a time to get results as there are many of the people who make use of this method except us. So if one want to get better results than other then need to provide useful & fresh information that one like to read & show their interest to get more info about it. And get their engagement in reading the content & then only you can get benefit through it.

I agree it's definitely a matter of quality. SEO is important, but if the content doesn't appeal to visitors, you can't grow a following or convert anyone.
