How about we put it this way... 100 unique articles submitted to 100 article directories (1 article per directory) will far outperform 1 article submitted to 100 article directories. However, 100 articles submitted to 100 article directories will far outperform submitting 100 unique articles to 100 article directories (1 article per directory).

Spinning can really take the quality out of any 'great' article. One has to pick and choose the phrases when an article is being written, in spinning you will put every option that comes to your mind.
I mostly stick to 'one article being submitted to 50/100' article directories.
as per my experience one article can submit approx on 40 sites if they are accepting already submitted article on his site because mostly site does not take duplicate content but do not worry these sites' count is very less.
Google likes unique content and i think it might better to submit 5 unique articles then 20 lousy ones
Agree with Charles. It'd give you better results if you submit unique articles to different directories.
Spinning can kill your artice quality.
Google, I believe, digest 30-50% of duplicate content and still would reward a 50% original content.
So,better to have partially and manually rewritten articles and syndicate it to the top 50 directories.

I usually submit on ezine first and after my article has been accepted on ezine it is the time I submit on other article directory and putting the article link on ezine and one for my website on my signature.

That was hardly an example. I advocate using the same article, or making a spinnable article to present to article directories.
