Other countries, such as Iran, China, and Saudi Arabia, are not great earners, and tend to just use up your bandwidth.
Below are some places to advertise that I recommend, and have found the best results from.
Top Sites/Lists
Top lists are websites that require you to link back on your index, and in return will then advertise your proxy. These are very useful, and it is crucial that you submit your proxies at the right times.
When to submit: You want to submit your proxies right before people start using them, otherwise they will be buried down under a load of URLs. A great time to post them is around 8am, right before you go to work. That way, while people are at work/school, it will be right there for them.
Also, never submit on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. People don't generally use proxies on weekends, and it is a wasted opportunity. Since most toplists only allow your site to be listed once, take advantage of the time you submit.
Proxy.org – This is a great place to get lots of traffic. It is the one of the most common proxy sites on the Internet, and I easily get about 200 hits from it the day after I submit my site. But that's not all. The owner also puts your proxy onto his newsletter, where I get around 1000 hits from that. Now, there are some pluses and minuses to this. The pluses are obviously, more traffic and money. The minuses are that you are likely to get a bit of unwanted traffic, such as Iranian traffic. As long as you block it, there should be no issue. Proxy.org also offers great newsletter blasts to over 80k members for just $5.
Tech-Faq.com – I am not putting this under 'Payed Advertising' because I find this a must, however it costs $1/listing (without a coupon). I get most of my traffic from this toplist alone. Your listing can easily get 1000+ hits in one day if you submit at the right time. You can contact the owner of Tech- Faq (Will.Spencer) and ask to buy coupons for more listings (maybe get a 10 listing coupon for just $8) or something like that. He likes to give out free coupons to new members of NetBuilders.org as well.
Tech-Faq.com Associated Top Lists – These are all top lists that are run by Tech FAQ. While they are much smaller, they still add up to a lot of traffic. You can find a good list of them at the bottom of this page. And that is just some of them. Every time you go onto a list, you will probably fine more. They are also free.
ProxyBuzz.com and ProxySites.in – I am putting these together because they are run by the same person, the latter being newer. These are really cool, and I personally took advantage of the payed listing for one of my proxies on both sites. Plus, you are allowed to resubmit your sites every 7 days, which is a huge plus.
Other Toplists – There are hundreds of toplists out there. I will link to a few more in the Resources section at the end of this eBook. You may also want to check out the Toplist Thread on Digital Point.
Yahoo! Answers
If you are looking for an advertising source that will only give you North American/UK traffic, then Yahoo! Answers is the place to go. Y!A is full of teenage school kids looking for proxies. There are new questions popping up every day, and it never seems to end.
Yahoo! Answers has this points system. First, you are only allowed to answer X amount of questions. As you get more points (for answering questions), you can answer more questions. You can find more info here.
You should spend a good 30 minutes – an hour each day answering questions. It really isn't hard, and I can answer about 30-40 questions in 30 minutes. Plus, I like to say that for every question you answer, 10 people will see it. So that's a potential 300 visitors for half an hour of work.
The first step is to find the questions. This isn't hard. Just go into their Advanced Search, and type in some keywords. I personally use “myspace facebook unblock school runescape” and check “Open Questions Only”. Change around the terms when you have answered all of the questions.
This should give you a good 1000 or so of relevant results. What I like to do is to go through them each, and copy and paste the same answer to all of them. It's not exactly the most white-hat method of advertising, but I haven't had an issue yet. Plus, if your account gets banned, you can just make another one.
This is the format of the answer that I use. Make sure to make your own, mine is just an example:
I suggest you try out these brand new proxies. Just type in a URL and press GO!

Happy Browsing! And don't forget to tell your friends and spread the fun!
I offer a list of 5 proxies, and then links to a bunch of different pages that people may find useful.
BTW, I would like to mention the 999 Error. After you post a link one too many times (I'm not sure exactly how many), you will get a 999 Error when trying to post. To solve this, I suggest you cycle through different proxy links. If you only have 1 proxy, then tough. Either use a redirection service, or don't make the link live (I don't recommend this, as lazy teenagers like clickable links).
Also, eventually you are going to realize that you have answered every question ever asked. I recommend that you wait a day or two, and give people some time to ask more questions. Then go on your answering rampage again!
Social Bookmarking
While you will not get millions of visitors through this method, it is worth it. People use social bookmarking sites like Digg, Delicious, and Stumbleupon for all of their sick proxy needs

Just spend a few minutes every time you make a proxy to submit your proxy to these bookmarking sites. If you have a bunch of friends, get it to the front page. You will get LOTS of traffic. Even if it doesn't get anywhere, I get about 15-20 US/UK visitors/submission from just Digg, so its good traffic.
Payed Advertising
Buying advertising is a completely optional route, and some people never take this route and their proxies are amazing. However, if you have a little money left over to invest, why not? I have bought payed advertising before, and I was not certainly disappointed. There are actually two main types of advertising for proxies: Sponsored Toplist Listings and Newsletter Blasts.
Sponsored Toplist Listings
These are special offers where you can get your proxy to stand out from the rest. This means either making it bold/colorful, or isolating it from the other proxies.
I have only bought the isolated type of listings, since I believe it is much more exposure. And the sites that I bought it from are Proxy Buzz and Proxy Sites.in (both were mentioned above). I like this type of advertising because I can actually see how many hits they have acquired. Plus, it is very cheap.
I'm not sure how much I would recommend the 'bold/colored listing' type of advertising. As a visitor, I don't think I would really care whether the link was bold or not, I'd just scroll down and randomly click, not caring where my mouse lands. But I guess that's up to you. If it works, it works, if it doesn't, it doesn't.
Newsletter Blasts
Newsletter Blasts are really a great form of advertising. Basically, ad networks and the such built up newsletters of people wanting new proxies. So once they get to around 1000 or more subscribers, they start offering newsletter blasts. For a certain amount of money, people will send your link via email to all of the subscribers. This is great depending on how recent these subscriptions are.
I have had some great results with some newsletter blasts, not so great with other ones. It's all a big experimentation really. You can find great offers in the Freebies and Advertising forums down in the NetBuilders Marketplace.
If you ever build up your own newsletter, then you too will be able to offer Newsletter Blasts, and make some money even after you stop making new proxies. But we'll talk about that in the next chapter.
Different Types of Traffic
Traffic is a very talked about subject in the proxy universe. Because of the nature of proxies, they tend to bring in a lot of visitors that are not English- speaking. Some of these visitors include people from Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, and the like. While there normally wouldn't be a problem with such visitors, there is when it comes to proxies.
Advertisement networks generally pay extremely low for this type of traffic, if anything at all. But because of the huge amounts of visitors you are probably going to get from one or more of these countries (I have problems with Iran), you can expect a lot of bandwidth usage. Now, while there is nothing wrong with getting a lot of visitors, there are several cons. If you are using way more bandwidth than you are making back money for, then it is not worth it. Save that bandwidth for US visitors that can actually make you more than $1.
Also, some advertisement networks, such as Adversal, require a minimum percentage of English speaking traffic. If you fall below, let's say, 50%, then you can get banned. This is not a good thing.
Now, don't get me wrong. If you are not having bandwidth or ad network issues, then there is no reason to get rid of the traffic. Even if you are earning just a tiny bit of money, as long as it causes no harm, you are still gaining money.
But then, sometimes, you just need to get rid of the traffic, since it serves no purpose to you.
Banning and Redirecting Traffic
Once traffic becomes an issue, you may want to start banning it from being able to use your proxy. If you have Glype, then great, you can use the IP ban option in your Admin CP.
In order to get a country's IP addresses, go to a website like Block a Country. Let's say you want to block Iran. Simply select Iran, and press Go.
You will get a list of IPs similar to the one below (I have included just one IP so you see the format):
order allow,deny
deny from 62.60.128.0/17
allow from all
If you wish to ban via your Glype Admin CP, you will need to just get the IPs (remove all of the other text).
However, if you wish to send these users to a 403 Error page (recommended), you will need to use an .htaccess file.
Make a file in your root (public_html) directory called .htaccess
Whatever Block a Country spits out, that is what you should place in there. This will send those visitors to a page similar to a 403 no permissions page. There are several reason why somebody might want to redirect these users. I know I redirect all of my Iran visitors to another website, because the owner is paying me for them. Some websites like to buy your banned traffic, so check out some webmaster/proxy forums and see if anybody is interested.
If you wish to successfully redirect a country, follow these steps (Thanks to sparks of NetBuilders):
- Download GeoLite Country and this INC file. Upload both into a directory into called 'geoip'.
- Place the following code at the VERY TOP of your index.php file:
PHP Code:
<?php
// PUT THIS CODE AT THE TOP OF YOUR INDEX.PHP BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE
include('geoip/geoip.inc'); //this file must exist in your directory
// Uncomment if querying against GeoIP/Lite City.
// include('geoip/geoip.inc');
$gi = geoip_open('geoip/geoip.dat',GEOIP_STANDARD);
// get the ip of the visitor
$addr = getenv('REMOTE_ADDR');
// translate his ip to a country code
$country = geoip_country_name_by_addr($gi, $addr);
// close the geo database geoip_close($gi);
$badcountry = array('Example','Example','Example','Example');
// redirect them if they suck
if(in_array($country, $badcountry)) header('Location: http://www.redirectedwebsite.com'); //enter a url or page on your site
?>
Replace each Example with the full name of a country. Scroll down through the INC file above to find a list of all of the full country names (if you need help).
Summary: There are several great places to advertise, however you must keep advertising if you wish to keep traffic. Toplists are quick and easy places for traffic. Yahoo! Answers is a great place for English speaking high quality traffic, and it is very recommended. While buying payed advertising is not necessary, if you have the extra money, but some newsletter blasts or sponsored listings for your proxies. Finally, not all traffic is good. You should consider blocking and redirecting low-converting traffic.
