PHP Proxies
These are the most popular types of proxies. PHP offers a lot of customization options, is very powerful, and does not use up too many resources. Some popular PHP proxies are PHPProxy, PHPhantom, and Glype. Now, I
think that Glype is the best script out of all of these. Why? It works straight from installation. It supports MySpace and Facebook, which strangely many scripts don't. And it is very easy to customize. Now, some parts of this guide will be assuming that you are using the Glype script (Like Chapters 5 and 7).
Other than that, the tips mentioned in this guide apply to any proxy. Now, don't get me wrong, other PHP proxy solutions aren't bad. However, PHPProxy was abandoned several months ago, and Glype is one of the few
proxies that have an active support forum and are constantly coming out with 6updates. In the end, it is your choice. But honestly, Glype is the way to go.
CGI Proxies
There is only one real popular CGI proxy script, and that is CGIProxy, created by James Marshall. I'm not going to get into CGI proxies that much, because they are not allowed on most hosts. Why? Cause they are resource hogs. It is controversial whether they actually work better or not than PHP scripts, but one thing for certain is they use up way more bandwidth than you really want a script to use. So that's all I have to say for CGI proxies.
JavaScript Proxies
If you need a JavaScript proxy, Zelune is the answer. However, recently, it seems their site has been changed and is now owned by PHPhantom … I honestly don't know the outcome of what's going to happen with that. Either way, I've linked Zelune and PHPhantom (above) straight to the download. JavaScript proxies are generally less server intensive. However, they are less customizable, and are not as reliable as PHP proxies. Because JavaScript is limited, you can only do so much with a proxy made of this language.
Ten Reasons to Use Glype
- Works From Installation – Configuration Not Necessary
- Supports MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube
- Is In Constant Development
- Has an Active Support Forum
- Most (If Not All) Proxy Hosts Allow It
- Does Not Use Too Many Server Resources
- Has a Great Plugin/Template System
- Has an Admin Control Panel
- Allows You to Edit Everything From One Config File
- Because It's AWESOME!!!! ☺
