    Why so few backlinks found?

Last week I subscribed to the Silver Package at http://www.forumlinkbuilding.com. I got my first link building report today, with a list of 120 new links. However, when I run the backlink checker, I find only 7 links, with 1 link listed as "working". Why are all the other backlinks not found? Does it take some time for them to show up?

The links need to be crawled before they will be found in yahoo and google which most of the backlink checkers use to count your links. Webmaster tools would probably give you a more accurate count. In any case, you will need to give the search engines some time to find the links and crawl them.

It is interesting that this link building service claims to have 250,000+ backlinks to their own site, yet their home page has a PR of 0.

    Hmmm.
You can have it fast, good or cheap. Pick any two.

How come if I search google for link:http://www.wheretorentacar.com I get zero results, but yet if I search for "wheretorentacar", I get several sites with valid links to the site?

Use Yahoo Site Explorer , Using Link: operator is not right way to check backlinks.

    You can also use backlinkwatch.com

I think you must not trust those who brag about how well they went with those who are offering them backlink packages. I just cant figure out how those who claim to give us tons of links in a shorter period of time couldn't even have much for their sites (sighs).

Ok here is how it works, searching link:Yoursite in Google will get you next to no links even if you have 100000s of links to your site. Google messes with their results so that no one can spy on their competition.

Yahoo is a little bit better, but still will not show all of your links. Really the only true way to know how many links you have is to count them as you go along, but since that is a waste of time just focus on how much traffic you are getting and know that each backlink you get brings you just a little closer to your goal.

You might try Backlink Checker for a quick check on your backlinks

Does this mean that webmasters should not trust the results returned by these sites when in fact these are the sites that most webmasters focus when doing SEO for their site?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand SEs only show dofollow links on their results. That's why only few links are returned when we use them to check a site's backlink.

PS: No intention of hijacking the thread. Just want to learn more.
