I have not tested, but it seems to me that those links should be good. (That is, unless they are built using IFRAME's, JavaScript, or NoFollow.)

We tested a large enough number of comments that I am fairly confident that was not a factor.

Is it possible maybe all blogs are from same IP that is why you are not getting the good results? or maybe those blogs are not related to your website?

We tested hundreds (thousands?) of blogs from all across the Internet, so I don't think IP was an issue.

(Incidentally, I have a PR6 page with links only from pages on the same IP addresses.)

We tested relevant and non-relevant blog pages.

I can't make my mind up about blog commenting - on the one hand Will is strongly against them yet many guys over on DP are arguing that its the best way to quickly increase SERP's and PR.

To be honest, it doesn't matter to me too much as the direct traffic justifies the effort but it would be nice to know that all those comments gave me back just a little link juice.

And when blog commenting is done properly and adds value, I don't see why it shouldn't.

I did not see any effect from the two tests I ran last year. I have yet to see any effect from the test I ran recently. The site I promoted actually received zero visitors for the last two days.

Interesting. Did you actually verify that the links were there?

On another note, I do think that Google can figure out where the links are (like being in the middle of a sentence) and can judge whether or not it's a blog comment or not. The needs to be text around the link in order for it to count more.

A lot of webmasters believe that they are getting some link juice from dofollow blog comments which is not to say that they are correct. Perhaps there is some value with the blog comments. But so little that the positive effects will only be felt on sites that have very little pr. The case being that it's a 100 times easier going from PR0=PR1 than PR0=PR5.

Somehow until today I still don't understand how a dofollow comment link can be considered as a vote by the website to tell google that your site is important. Probably they might have put a full stop to all these practices and thus the search engine now ignores links coming from commenting.

I don't see any negatives to blog commenting, I don't know where you see them. Blog comments give readers a chance to check out your site, the blog owner to check out your site, plus give you backlinks and some of their PR juice back to your site. Even if the link is NoFollow, it still counts as a backlink and can be helpful to your site. Just be sure not to spam blogs with useless comments, that's where the issue starts

I suppose it depends what user base you have already. I am in the search engine wilderness at the moment so 3-5 visitors from a blog post probably justifies the effort.

Its all about targeting the right audiences though - most of my comments have resulted in very little traffic, whereas one post on one directly site brought me 20-25 visitors in a week or so.
