Thread: Building a blog community with wordpress 3.0

  1. Building a blog community with wordpress 3.0

Now that wordpress 3.0 supports multiple blogs, is anyone looking into building a blog community?

After thinking about it for a long time, I decided to move forward with my blog community project. I was thinking about using wordpress MU. But since I already had wordpress 3 installed, I'am just going to use 3 instead of MU.

One of my spare domain names is a .us extension. So I thought, what better domain extension for a blog community then .us?

The only problem I'am having is the subdoamains, for some reason they do not want to resolve in DNS. So I contacted tech support last night. Hopefully they will have a solution today so I can get this project up and running.

I'll try to keep yall updated as things move forward.

In your cpanel enter the wildcard * as a new sub-domain. That may solve your problem.

That is what I did to enable resolving of unlimited subdomains on HostGator.

I'll probably start doing that, there is nothing better than running multiple blogs at once, the potential for profits keeps increasing drastically with each blog. I think word press is the only blog software to allow such a thing.

    What about Drupal ?
It has quite powerful multi-blog capabilities.

Have you looked into bbPress, BuddyPress, or Simple:Press?

WordpressMu merged into the main Wordpress code tree as of Wordpress 3.0.

I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

  6. Thank you Will, that buddy press looks pretty nice, I might to take a serious look into it.

What it is, I have my own personal blog on domain A, forum on domain B, and domain C just sitting there. All three of the domain names are on related topics, so their going to target the same group - but in a different way.

My main blog takes up a lot of my time, so I have nothing left over to put towards domain C. So I thought about building a blogging / social networking community. That way other people can provide the content.

I got wordpress 3 setup for multiuser, but I have to add a wild card sub-domain. Its just something I have been neglecting to do.

    just a quick suggestion

if you are stuck with some host which doesn't allow wildcard subdomain.

just add those domains manually will also give the same output.

Thank you, but I want something that is dynamic and flexible.

I also lease a dedicated server, so it should not be a big deal.

  9. good luck to it. i assume you would allow the users to earn, how should they earn?
