I often met many sites with simple theme but having Alexa Ranks under 100K. Mostly, they have good navigation and make me easy to find the topics that I want to read without wait it loading too long. And the one important thing, most of posts they have is useful and update frequently.

Simple is always good, anyone with some taste doesn't like kitsch, everyone can do kitsch, its no art,but taking something simple and making a design that is clean, and beautiful yet functional is the key...take Jonathan Ive as the prime example of this.
But when it comes to themes,I am not talking about the kind of design, its just that it should attract a visitor, and dont scare him.I just Googled for 2 minutes to find a example
infinitydownline.com and here is one, this is the kind of "design" to avoid for your site.
So I think that you dont have to spend a fortune on a theme or design, you can take a free template, change the design the best way you can and have a usable design for your site.

From jump street, the theme isn't as important as the content. It's always possible to build out a site and make the investment in a theme when the traffic is there.

As you said, "the traffic isn't worth anything when it's not converting".

Well I agree that it isnt important as much as the content if its halfway decent, but if it looks like my example above, then the theme can have a impact on the success of your website.

    Hi,

It's kinda a two edged sword isn't it? You need good content for google to send you people but you need some type of a theme for the people when they get to your site.

Sure. In the end you need both. For someone with limited resources or taking a "wait and see approach", they wold be better off investing the money in content. It's fairly easy in Wordpress to update the theme once Google starts sending you traffic.

Although, should you plan to write most of the content yourself then investing the time/money onto the theme would be the better course.

    Hi,

Yes I agree changing a theme in WP is easy and can be done at a later time..Making content again more important then the theme.
