Here is why you need a landing page:

Convert Into A Potential Reader

Your blog's RSS Subscriber count is an important metric of your blog's success. A good landing page can convert lurkers into readers. Just putting a small email subscribe box can do wonders.

Visitors May Feel Deserted

However good your blog's design is your visitor is new to it. The visitor may find your blog strange. So, there are chances that he might leave your blog, thus increasing to your bounce rate.

You really don't want this to happen, so you must explain things.

Increase Visit Length

Putting links to popular posts on your blog (which can be done with a simple plugin) on your landing page can help old posts to get noticed. It will make your visitors hang around.

1. Place some testimonial
2. On landing page, offer something for free such e-book, audio interview, etc..

And do you know that landing page template sometime related to conversion rate?

I'm not use landing page, but using redirect to the main sales letter.

Most people spend around $500 on landing pages :)

Testimonials really do not help anymore as 99.99% of them are fake.

I think one of the important things to have in a modern landing page is a video of the writer/producer of the product generally talking about what the product is and how it'll help. By doing this, he's showing his face and therefore making the whole thing look more trustworthy.

in way to answer the question, we should condition ourself as a visitor of the landing page. What are you searching about and what makes your interested? i'm as visitor, beside seeing detail of product, i'm always look for testimonial. So, i think testimonial is helped. About 99.99% is fake, i disagree, not all site using fake testimonial.

Sorry Akira, but I'm going to have to agree with Farrhad. When I used to do freelance writing, I was asked to write testimonials for some different products, most of which I hadn't even seen! I was writing these testimonials based on what the rest of the sales page said.

You can usually tell the real testimonials apart from the fake ones though. For instance, the genuine ones will often have links to the people who actually wrote them.

Once, i opened a mini-site being promoted and the first testimonial i see is mine. I was like- WTF!!

I immediately mailed him and FIRED him. I had never even heard of the testimonial before and it said something like this:

"I highly recommend this product. This is the best product I hae ever bought. Take my word for it"- Farrhad A

He then removed it. Anyways he even joined this forum, and Swastik banned him after one post =P

EDIT: I removed the last bit as that guy joined WMP :P

Right now there is a new hosting company that a friend of mine has made. I know him personally so I don't want to mess things, but I really did not like him using my name on his homepage. He said I have hosted all my sites with him...complete crap!

That is messed up! :S I get testimonials from people for my portfolio but maybe I should just call them "references" and I use these for one of my clients! Now I feel outdated. :sarcastic:

There are two types of landing page, reference and transactional.

A reference landing page presents information that is relevant to the visitor. These can display text, images, dynamic compilations of relevant links, or other elements. Reference landing pages are effective if they meet the objectives of their publishers, which may be associations, organizations or public service entities. For many reference landing pages, effectiveness can be measured by the revenue value of the advertising that is displayed on them.

A transactional landing page seeks to persuade a visitor to complete a transaction such as filling out a form or interacting with advertisements or other objects on the landing page, with the goal being the immediate or eventual sale of a product or service. If information is to be captured, the page will usually withhold information until some minimal amount of visitor information is provided, typically an email address and perhaps a name and telephone number as well – enough to "capture the lead" and add the prospect to a mailing list.
