    New Blogger - Got Suggestions?

Greetings, I am extremely new to blogging and I was wandering where were some popular topics to blog about, is a little bit of everything blog a good idea?
How should I advertise my blog?
How long should a blog post be?
How often should I post a new post?

    Thanks for the help!
    Steven here, my friends.

    1) A little bit of everything blog is not a very good idea as- You will have the option of what to post, but the subscribers will fluctuate. I have experience with this.

2)You can advertise with PPC (AdWords is good) in the beginning.

3)Should be 500 words at the least, and generally the maximum is 2000 words. It is up to you. But remember quality over quantity.

4)The frequency depends on you. It is better to post once a month (an amazing post) than 10 crap posts in a month. Content is king remember.
    I would recommend a 4 day gap.

Hope I have answered your questions properly.

This is better than the replies I got on another forum which said I should make 5 posts a day which I found to be VERY absurd. 1 Post every 4 days is much more doable than 5 a day.

    Thanks for the reply!

I did have a blog, but I don't update it anymore, it only lasted like 3 days. lol.
Although, thanks to the posts here I might just try making a blog about making money online since I know a decent bit about doing just that.

I recently wrote a post entitled 'Tips For Monetising New Blogs', so that should give you a good idea about when and how you should start advertising. LINK HERE

Regarding how often you should post, I've also written a post about that on TheBloggingPark... lol See it here.

The blog post should be around 600 words (in my opinion) as this is the optimum size to get a good amount of information across, but not too long to bore the reader. If I'm writing a topic that needs more words, I'll usually split it into two or more posts and do a series

I'm now going to do what I do best, and be completely different from everyone else.

On picking a topic: go with what you like to write about. Picking a "popular" niche also means picking a saturated one. Try and find a topic you like, would like to know more about, and understand fairly well and go with that. Make sure to leave it broad.

    1) Don't blog about everything, but I've been known to talk about how much I hate the word "niche." You should pick a category such as "writing" or "hockey" or "music" and narrow down maybe one level if you have a particular interest, such as "freelance writing" or "famous hockey players" or "how to play trumpet" and move on from there.

    2) When you say "advertise" do you mean make money or do you mean promoting your blog? The best way to promote is to put it up for review on forums, especially those in your market, and comment on blogs that you enjoy reading, and that are in your market. Maybe email one or two bloggers (low-medium level) and form some friendships for tips and a possible guest post arrangement.

As far as advertising, many people will say "adsense." I personally hate adsense, especially after it crashed OW (my blog). I would say skip the middle man and grab a copy of OiOPublisher and set your rates to something reasonable, such as $5/month. Once you've got some decent traffic and some great content, ask around forums, and bloggers in your market, and see if they wouldn't like to purchase an advertisement. You can also try finding relevant affiliate marketing programs, but only promote one or two until you get the hang of it.

    3) A blog post should be as long as it takes for you to make your point. You can make a one-word blog post if it makes your point, or a 1,000 word pillar article if you're going in depth. Once you find a writing rhythm and develop your own style, your posts will naturally take on a mutual length. Worrying about the confines of word ranges is stupid in the beginning, because it limits your writing potential. However, learn how to write clearly. I have a post about that here:

    http://outstandingwriter.com/2009/02...rough-writing/

    4) Posting a new post depends upon how many you can write and generally write in a day. It's seriously tempting to write a new post everyday (and even multiple times a day) when you start out, but save those ideas and develop them so you have posts in the waiting room for when you get bored. I know I personally get irritated if I go any longer than one day without posting, and I prefer to read blogs that update at least every other day. Posting frequency depends on your abilities + your personal preference + your readers' opinions - the time it takes you to write.

I would recommend every other day. I do monday, wed, and friday and take the weekend off. Occasionally I'll leave off a friday post. With news posts on the weekends.

    ---

Brandon mentioned something about ebooks. DO NOT PAY FOR EBOOKS. If you're going to pay for knowledge, go out and buy a real book. Definitely pick up the Problogger Book. There are a couple of quality free ebooks and newsletters you can join, such as http://www.jimsmarketingblog.com and there's a really great one from http://www.obviouswriting.com that will help you write more persuasive and interesting content.

I would seriously consider staying away from paid ebooks unless they are A-listed high profile offers. Definitely get reviews before buying.

    Hope that helped.

That was an amazing post. What I meant by advertising was both selling and buying advertising.

I think on my new blog I am going to do several posts ahead of time, in the first day post 3 posts, then 1 every day after that. That way I have a week or more already typed up, and if I get energetic one day make a bunch more. That way I don't have to work every day just in bursts. Sound good?

Nice plan. I've got a couple of posts that might help you out:

As far ad buying advertising, I would stick to social media promotion, and buy low-value ads on various niche blogs (such as ones that are $3/month to $10/month) to spread your image around more. Still, you can easily generate traffic just by learning some SEO skills, social marketing skills, etc.
