Personally I think it depends on the type of blog you're running. If you're running a blog where you're purely giving information, nothing else, I recommend writing a bit about the subject and how brilliant your site is at delivering content on that subject.
If, however, you're running a site where you are connecting with the readers and that sort of thing (which you should try to do), I recommend an about page where you talk more about yourself.
Here's my about page, if anyone's interested... I recently spent some time making it a bit better:

For me, an about page is a thing you should spend some tim on it to make it best as possible. Often, this is the one of the first page I visit on almost any website.
It should be as much, if not more, interesting than any other page on your blog.
Humor is a good alternative too.
Agreed. I know, for instance, Darren Rowse (problogger) won't write anything about his wife or his little boy. He just calls them "my wife" and "my little boy". Personally I think you should talk a bit about yourself, but you shouldn't start talking about your family because that oversteps the line a little bit.
That said, I do think that the "perfect" about page varies from person to person as we all have a certain line we don't like to cross (in terms of confidentiality), and we all have different personalities.
On the other site, Darren Rowse doesn't need that much of an about page anymore... also he gets a little more detailed about his life there: http://www.livingroom.org.au/blog/ar...out_darren.php
Absolutely true.
Hmm, reading that 'About' page made me think... do you really need to go into info about your personal life? I mean, whilst it's great to talk a bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests and MAYBE a bit about your past, your readers aren't interested in your family, and by posting about them you're only getting them involved in your work, which is never good.
I'd say it is an important piece of your site, specially for blog sites. People want to know who's behind it. I know I do when I visit someone's blog.
The perfect "About" page? That's a hard question. For me, it's a page with a small bio about yourself, what's the site about and why people should stick around. It should also include a contact form so people can get in touch with you.
