Of curse it can be done.
Think about this when you have a site, you are an unknown.
You got to have a hook that makes that site go viral.
Think about the person (mike cheney?) who put up the first pixel ad site.
I believe he did not really advertise that new site, but others picked up on it and it went viral, both on the net and off the net.
The man made what, a million dollars?
To presell advertising on a site that is new or in the planning stages?
Find the hook and you got it made.
Now experience by me?
Webmasters are not too keen on advertising on sites without page rank.
Stupid, but there you are.
Advertise on forums and the only thing they want is page rank.
No page rank, no one will advertise.
(kind of weird and I believe putting the cart ahead of the horse, but then that is me)
Presell could work when you use the homebuilder model. 1) Provide a rendering of the finished product. 2) Explain what you are going to get. So many backlinks, pages on the site, article marketing etc 3) Offer a discount or some other incentives.
Also, to make it work you would need to have a list of webmasters or seo companies looking to buy adverising as well as a proven track record.
This made me laugh big time.
Someone is gonna read this and PM me saying we are looking for a sites to advertise on that talks about are product. We don't have the time or man power to run a site. This sound like a great idea. Could you make a small site that is on our product. Are advertising budget would allow for XX dollars a mo.
Now that is the goal I am hoping for.
There are a lot of people that build small to large sites for others, both companies and individuals.
And charge them so much per month for it being up and running.
Because again, some people/companies are too lazy, don't want to mess with everything, etc. to do it themselves.
But back to you and your advertising.
Truthfully, you just have to let people know your new site and how much.
999 people reading about it will not take you up on it.
But that one person out of 1,000 will do so.
Or accept the fact that it's not reality. It's so easy to say, "I want someone to give me money before I have anything of value," but that's not reality. Are you going to sign a contract with the advertiser that says, "if you don't get your value back in X months/year, I'll refund you your money"? If not, then who would do it?
Instead, you need to learn to focus on the important things. For example, I am launching a blog soon. I am going to focus on the important things to push a significant amount of traffic to the site fast: guest blog posts. Then, once I've got them at the site, I am going to use Aweber to get them to subscribe to my newsletter so I can convince them to come back again and again. And when that happens, I'll contact people to advertise. However, to assume that you can get people to advertise on your site--so you can break even--is just not the right way of thinking.
No business does it. A magazine invests so much more than it makes in the beginning. It's why so many magazines fail. They can't get the subscriber level and advertisement level to cover the costs.

Agree with Sami.
Businesses advertise constantly on new venues that open up.
I sell advertising on new blogs of mine.
People know me.
And on the net, there are scads of webmasters looking for advertising.
If the price is right, on new sites.
I have bought advertising on new sites.
Iowadawg...To sell advertising on a site that you have already launched, sure, that's fine. I'm looking to do that on any site I launch. However, to sell advertising on a site that has YET to launch? From what I gathered, Sami wants there to be someone else to invest the money by buying advertising so she doesn't have to invest any of her own. That's not reality.
The whole movie business is convoluted. He won't even think about taking a movie to production until he has producers on board which is a valid point. However, you're talking partners, not advertisers. The producer becomes a partner. Yes, you can get investment money before you even launch something, but to get advertisers doesn't seem legitimate.
Once you launch, go ahead. But, in Sami's original thread, she said, " Where would one find advertisers for a blog that is not online and has zero PR?" That's not legitimate. And, if it is, will she be signing a contract that guarantees something? Perhaps at launch, you'll have advertisers, but to get money before launch seems a bit...unrealistic.
