    Until about a month ago, I never even had akismet on any of my blogs.
    Then bam...I was like Sami (how are you dear?) and it seems all the spam comment bots found my blogs.
    So I turned on akismet and that has taken care of all my spam problems.

    I never bother to look at what ends up in the spam folder.
    I figure if it is a valid comment, the commenter will contact me.
    Which a few now and again do.

    I remember the days before Akismet when a popular blog would get hundreds of spam messages per day and all had to be reviewed manually. Akismet practically saved the blogging world.

    There are legions of people out there who hunt down blogs that have do follow comment.
    Then they add it to lists of blogs and either sell the lists or pass them around.
    Then there are software that do the job automatically.

    Something like directories.

    I've been using the wp-spamfree and it's was working great. So good that I have the comments on auto-approve.

    After Sami started this post, I checked the sites and have around 400 spam comments each which is going to take too much time to check.

    I'm going to have to switch to akismet. The only issue is that you need to check the spam box at regular intervals or you will loose some comments.

    Good News! I didn't realize that the new akismet plugin has an option: Find Comment Moderation and check the box in front of Don’t discard spam on old posts. This solves my issue with comments being deleted.

    Hi,

    I have that turned on I still have the problem of going through 350+ comments a day. I don't know if it is worth searching all of them hunting for 1 or two that akismet missed or called spam.

    That would take hrs each day to read all those comments. I think I could spend my time better doing other things.

    How does Akismet flag spam? Is it based on reports linked to the email and/or ip address.

    If you are going to check all the spam bin comments then why bother using this plugin?

    That makes sense and I did some research.

    The issue is that many webmasters label comments that they don't like as spam causing Akismet to flag legitimate comments. Checking the spam bin comments allows you to rescue the comments. But as Sami pointed out, there are too many spam comments to justify the time it takes to review the spam bin.

    I came across a solution which is to add a hack to the exit() line in the PHP code of the Akismet plugin.

    The hack would send a notification that the comments were flagged as spam and allow the poster to contact the webmaster.

    Code:
    if($akismet->isSpam()) {
    // Save the suspicious comment in the spam table
    /*** Insert query goes here ***/

    // Delete the buffer
    ob_end_clean();
    exit("Akismet thinks your comment is spam. E-mail me (amber at tangerinecs dot com) if that's not the case.");
    }
