I don't have many sites yet and they don't really have traffic so spam isn't really a problem. But here is a interesting post I read a few weeks back.

I can get 10 of the exact same spam comments in a day with each coming from a different IP address. I've tried looking at banning IPs, but there are just so many different IPs that it becomes too time consuming.
Akismet is working well for me. I rarely see it toss a legitimate comment into the spam bucket, and it only misses a few that are obvious spam. I flag every spam comment that gets through as spam, rather than deleting it.

Hi,
Your lucky only 10. Yesterday Akismet spam was 502
I will not read check that many. I did install the wp plugin so far NO email saying Akismet was wrong about a comment.
I am wondering something something different but on the same lines as your comment TopDogger. No blocking ip's but allowing ip's. Most of the spam I get is not coming from the US. I have wp plugin WassUp to track your visitors in real time and I love itI have been known to have a window open and just stare at that for a half hr. just watching where, and how many people are on the site and what they are looking at.
Would you just allow US, UK and Europe. Very few spam I am get seems to be coming from those places.
What do you think that would due to the overall bottom line of the site?
I know spam would be cut way dow, but if Akismet is working I guess that would not be important.

Have you known about scrapebox? They use it.
On a couple of blogs that I'm using WP-SpamFree, I've started adding words to Comment Blacklist in the wp-admin panel under discussion. Hoping this will make WP-SpamFree move effective.
Seems that most of the spam is coming from casino, handbag, essay, teen to name a few.
I never heard of it. What does it do?
Okay, today checked all my blogs and spam is down to close to zero!
Sami, are you still getting all those spam comments every day?
Hi,
OH Yes.
Spam is running around 350-500 a day right now. Akismet is doing all the work for me.
It not running in the 800 so that is a good thing.
Site must of been on a list that said spam her.
This makes me wonder something else. What are big site getting for spam? I am just a small blog I wonder how many the big blogs are getting?
Sami
Another way to cut down on the comment spam is to turn off commenting after 30 days.
