More than funds I think dedication is needed.
Some tips:
-Write list articles
-[How To] articles
-If you are serious about it get a great custom design!
Patience is also needed.
Friends too.
Loyal subscribers.
*ahem*
Time. Not months, years. Actual, invested, well-spent time.
I think I read a post once about RWW, and the owner said two years of constant blogging. I have recently set a personal goal of trying to make 3 posts a day. My reasoning? I'm guessing my regulars won't read all 3, but will at least find one that they will like at least a little. Once post a day equals they do or not. Get a few nots in a row, and it could mean goodbye subscriber.
Why make three posts a day if you think your readers won't benefit. Nobody wants to dig for good content. Don't write something if it won't enhance your blog or help your readers. Plus if you only post once a day, thats 3x as much content - keeping you blogging longer. :S
The reasoning is simple. Though I try to keep on topic, not everyone likes the same stuff. For example. Let's say you like to watch comedy movies. If I only crank out comedies for adults, and your a kid you won't like my movies. If I make some comedies for adults, some for kids, and some for teens I capture a larger audience.
There is another reason as well. The more pages on your site, the more traffic generated from search engines.
I think if we blog on a regular basis and write good content then we make it to the top.
