Will guest blog posts count as duplicate content?

I have been doing guest blogs on Xanga.com - The Blogging Community, and they always ask for the link where the original article is posted. Then when your post is submitted, you get a link at the bottom that takes readers to the post. Your article is there on the site, but also on YOUR site. Will this cause a duplicate content penalty by google? Or is it more beneficial than not?

So if a specific article is only on my site, but is posted on the guest blog site, then it won't be penalized?

I tested this recently by distributing about a dozen posts from one of my blogs through ArticlePool.

    The results were odd:

    1. Initially the copies of my article beat the original article in the SERPS, but several were listed on page one.
    2. Then, my article floated to the top, but the copies were still listed on page one.
    3. Now, the duplicate articles are missing from page one.

Google usually does a good job of determining the original article.

I love your tests. But what would this mean for my actual site?

Xanga's a bit different than my tests.

I can't ever recall seeing Xanga appear in the SERPS.

    Also, are Xanga links nofollow?

Proves once again that Google needs some time to detect a duplicate.

I think they may be dofollow, but I'm not sure....
