Wordpress library images cannot be rotated

    Anyone know what this happens....?

    1. Rotating vertical images to the WP library they end up being displayed vertically.

    2. When I try to rotate them I cannot. The rotate arrows are grayed out.

What am I missing? Permissions? This feature does not work? What's the deal?

All I found searching the WP forums was a 2 year old answer from the same topic that said this feature is not yet supported.

    Thanks.

    What version of WordPress?
What role are you using to edit them?

Maybe it's a javascript conflict. I had this issue with Joomla trying to add 2 different types of slideshows on the same page. Each slide-show has been using other scripts and this messed up everything for me. Maybe it's something different at your side.

I'm not sure I understand your second question. These are just images coming directly off the iPhone.
Uploading them from within WP admin changes their orientation and there is no way to rotate them back.

No idea... For now, I think its a bug in WP.

The only info I can find on the WP forums is from 2 years ago where the mod says that this feature is not supported.

You've answered both of my questions.

    This is likely what's happening:

"Some mobile devices that use WordPress for Android (and iPhone) are not capturing images in the correct orientation, instead they are writing the EXIF orientation to the image instead (which is a standard method these days). In wp-android and other external clients that offer full size image upload, these images will not be rotated correctly upon upload."

    This means:
"The EXIF Orientation tag is not respected by the image handler. "

#14459 (Rotate Full Size Images on Upload) – WordPress Trac

The issue was logged by WordPress teams 3 months ago and is still pending review. As of yet, there does not appear to be a fix.

A workaround (as you probably already know) would be to download the images to a computer and upload them via the WordPress interface.

Use some other image software to open, rotate, and save them to your computer BEFORE uploading them to WP.

Thank for the detailed explanation. That pretty much answers my questions. And yes, I just did it the old fashioned way.

I don't mind downloading and uploading with an FTP client. Its the way I always did it anyway prior to WP. I just figured since the option was there I might be able to streamline the process.

    Thanks again!

On other thing though. This still does not explain why the image rotation buttons inside of WP do not work. Unless I am missing something?
    Thanks.

There are a few possibilities here. Let's rule out the easy ones first.

Please try loading the WP image editing utility in a different browser. (Seriously. Occasionally it's just a browser issue. )

Please confirm the imagerotate() function is not missing from your PHP library.

#11536 (Rotate image buttons don't show up on PHP installs without imagerotate()) – WordPress Trac

We'll then delve into the possibility that the iPhone exif data has disabled WP's ability to rotate it.

    Found the problem.

Note: This function is only available if PHP is compiled with the bundled version of the GD library.

Looks like we built with the system libgd.

    Thanks again for the assistance.
