Did Anything happen on May 20th with Searches

    Hi,

Did Anything happen on May 20th with Searches? All of a sudden my traffic is cut in half

I am still seeing traffic from all search engines just not as much.

    Any ideas why?

    That is a significant drop.

There weren't any official updates in May, but Google continues to target guest blogs. They appear to be picking those off one at a time. You can be a victim of this either by being a guest blogger who points links to your site, or by allowing guest bloggers to post on your site.

If you saw a simultaneous drop in search engine traffic from Google, Yahoo and Bing, the problem moist likely resides with your web site or hosting company. Due to repeated attacks on servers, some hosting companies are restricting access to their servers.

One blog of mine took the hit on 5-13.
Traffic dropped on that day by over 50% and even now, taking me some work to get it back on track to hopefully get back to where it was.

I don't have any guest bloggers on my sites. I'll ask if any changes were made to the server?

    Thanks

Also check your backlinks in Webmaster Tools or BacklinkWatch.com. Google enabled negative SEO with the Penguin updates. It is pretty easy to take out a competitor these days simply by pointing a couple of thousand crappy links at the site. Thousands of links in crappy directories are cheap.

A paintball store took out my Paintball site and several other paintball sites just about the time that Penguin first hit. All they did was point hundreds of crappy links at the sites.

Most of my sites have been slowly losing search traffic.

No changes have been made since the 20th. The firewall and DoS protections all have Google's IP address ranges in the allow list to prevent them from being blocked.

    Hi,

I went to this site BacklinkWatch.com and checked most of my links that show up are all coming from the same places that they have been from the time I launched the site. Most are from here netbuilders.org Not much new has been added that I can tell.

I think that multiple links from this forum will only count as one link, so there may be a fluctuation of the link power (PR) as threads come in and out of popularity. And 1 good link is not enough these days to resist negative SEO.

A diverse range of quality backlinks has been a requirement for strong search engine positioning for a few years now according to the Google tatami slicer guy.

For quite some time I have been saying that forum signature links can be bad if they are from forums unrelated to the theme of your site. A couple of years ago I ran an extensive experiment which concluded that unrelated forum signature links were useless. However, since that time Google has turned a lot of links that they previously ignored into links that poison your rankings. Signature links that pass PageRank are technically a violation of Webmaster Guidelines. I stopped using signature links 3 or 4 years ago when that became apparent.

    Link Schemes

Try removing the signature links for a couple of weeks and see if your traffic comes back. Andy is correct about the link diversity issue. Too many links from one site is never a good idea.

The Matt Cutts video is almost two years old, so the penalty could have become algorithmic. Google is not telling us about 90+% of the things they are doing.

If you use Webmaster Tools it should tell you if a manual penalty was applied. I have seen a lot of sites that were clearly penalized (traffic dropped off a cliff) for something that s not apparent and has not been identified in Webmaster Tools.

Some bloggers are really upping their game to attract natural links such as the CSS Tricks blog where the posts are very comprehensive.
