Smile Firefox 3.5 and HTML 5

    Hi,

I recently attended Mozilla Camp Mumbai.

There were many pro's speaking and it was a great experience.

There was an amazing presentation by Arun Ranganathan who is a Web Standards Evangalist at Mozilla...really kewl guy.

He showed some ABSOLUTELY CRAZY AND AMAZING stuff HTML 5 and FF3.5 can do.

One of the things was dynamically change a video and customize it with CSS- no need of flash is involved.

I am mailing Arun and requesting him if he can share that video with us.

What are your thoughts about HTML 5?

    Cheers!

I had attended a seminar by Opera on Open Web Standards some months back. Even they talked about HTML 5 and showed many great examples about the video tag and many more things. HTML 5 is really exciting...but it will be fully implemented by the year 2022

I agree with you it will take long but I do not think THAT long.

HTML 5 is going to be the most popular version of HTML after HTML 3. HTML 4 was not too widely popular.

Browsers like FF 3.5 are the ones always up to day but the problem is <sarcasm>great browsers like Internet Explorer</sarcasm> are the ones which take time to update.

    Got a reply from Arun:

Absolutely! Feel free to share the presos. Currently, the videos are on videos.mozilla.org, but we'll soon put them on air.mozilla.org .

Here's an Ogg/Theora and an MP4 version of Arun's video message.

HTML 5 is really awesome. However, it will take a lot of time to set in.

It brings about many changes like:

    -Removes many tags
    -No more <font> crap

    Also, one important thing:

    The current Doctype is:

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
However in HTML 5 it is just something like:

    <!DOCTYPE html>

I never knew all this. The DOCTYPE part was a real headache and I would always copy it from other pages :P

    HTML5 resource

A great resource on HTML5 and how to use it today can be found on the HTML5 Doctors page HTML5 Doctor, helping you implement HTML 5 today

Some very useful things to read and tryout. I would suggest to read some post about HTML5 on these places too:

    1) Adactio (aka Jeremy Keith)
    Adactio: Journal&mdash;The HTML5 Equilibrium

    2) A List Apart article by John Allsopp
