Google Confirms: Keyword and Description Meta Tag No Effect on Search Rankings

Google Confirms: Keyword and Description Meta Tag No Effect in Search Rankings

    Matt Cutt's confirms
, Google doesn't use either the keyword or description tag in ranking websites.

Matt Cutt's gives the following answers:

    1. "Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present."

    2. "Even though we sometimes use the description meta tag for the snippets we show, we still don't use the description meta tag in our ranking."

One way to put the information to use is either write a quality description that will improve your ctr or not have one at all.

According to me, having one always helps and is highly recommended, atleast for the homepage.
Google randomly picking up some text and adding it in the SERPs discussion makes it look spammy and doesn't attract visitors.

It's advantageous to have a well written description. It isn't always bad though to have no description. In case where the site is content rich, the quality content in the snippet can help provide a nice ctr rate.

It saves some time. You can always add the descriptions later should it appear that they are needed.

I think keyword meta tag might be not used by Google any more but the description tag should be still useful for ranking purpose.
