agreed. I am not sure if THAT was the reason, but having been listed in local directories with related businesses is one thing I believe to have helped me. If it isn't topic related, I skip the step.

I still think that building quality links is the way to go. This is where you define quality as referral traffic potential. It will be quite costly in terms of time and money. Though over the long term, you are building a stable traffic source.
