    Unique IP

    Hi,

What is the importance of having a unique IP for your site(s)? Do search engines pay much attention to that? Does AdSense mind that your website shares its IP with 200 other websites. Is it worth giving extra money to get a dedicated IP on shared hosting only for your sites?

I know that by buying a VPS or a dedicated server, you automatically get your own IP, but it would be much of a hassle for me to move things now.

  2. I don't think that the search engines pay much attention to IP addresses.

My dedicated server has hundreds of sites on it and there hasn't been a problem from that.

I've built pages up to PR6 using only links from the same IP, so I think that even linking between sites on the same IP works.

I wonder then why do people prefer getting links from a network of blogs/sites that are on different C class IP addresses?

Because they think that Google (or Bing, etc...) does look at IP addresses, or may in the future.

Let's say that someone who has a shared account on the same server as me builds spam/illegal sites -- would that cause a problem for my sites? That's what I was aiming to ask.

    I don't think so.

Pretty much an unpridictible aspect for sure, Almost 60% Niche websites today are usually on shared servers, and google won't take risk to ban the particular server IP's because they know other account holders may suffer, But sometime if other account holders on that shared server does somthing silly, spaming or somthing unethical, then That IP can get black listed and thus it will harm other sites hosted on that server as well. So in that case buying a dedicated Ip for shared Hosting is always a wise choice, and its hardy $2/month [ Hostmonster, HostGator], which is affordable i guess.

I've heard in multiple occasions that interlinking all your sites (or many of them) in the same IP can harm your SERPs.
But I think that if you do not create 400 sites by the night and link them all between themselves (which is pretty easy to do) you shouldn't have any problem.

I have myself a big VPS in which I host many domains with several thousands of indexed pages each in the same server without any problem.

And I don't add links between my domains (just in case).

I have never used shared hosting on any serious projects - so I can't answer whether does it help or not to have a dedicated IP. But I don't personally think it does matter - I just use VPSs because I don't like being afraid of someone else copying my PHP code or, even worse, my databases. And all of my sites are quite CPU intensive (bulk data) so I like being in control of my sites - instead of someone who can take them all down with a single mouse click.

Just my two cents: at the "Webmaster Stimulus" SEO competition, most of the current leaders are using shared hosting
