Thread: Using Blogspot with domain?

I'm considering starting a new blog which I'll be updating daily, but which will be a 100% money making site. I want to start with AdSense and then look at other programs later.

Question is I don't think it's going to be a spectacular money earner so I need to keep costs down, especially my time managing it, so an obvious solution is to use a free CMS like blogspot.

Does anyone have any experience of using blogspot and AdSense together? My goal is about $100-200 per month for this site, could using blogspot instead of Wordpress prevent me make it difficult to do this?

I would definitely suggest registering your own domain and setting up wordpress to power your blogs. I believe 100% that you will have better returns in doing so

Yeah and as your goal is $100,- & $200,- per month, you should even go better with your own website instead

Why? If I register a domain and point it at blogspot why would it perform less well than Wordpress?

Well I don't understand why you would do that...
If you're planning to make that much money with the site and you can get like hosting for 20$ a year.. than I wouldn't use the free blogspot thing...
As also.. you can't really 'sell' the website...

Setting up a blogspot is very simple, literally 30seconds. And I don't have to worry about maintaining the site. That means I can focus my time and energy on writing posts and building backlinks. And it's cheaper than paying for hosting.

As for selling the blog, well I don't tend to sell my sites, I either keep them or close them down when they're no longer useful.

Let's say $100-$200 per month, that would lead you to an average $1800 per year more or less.
Most hosting companies charge you $50 per year and they offer you the domain, so that's a 2.7% running cost.

Blogspot platform basically sucks, even though it's reliable (uptime I mean).

If you're serious about making money online you should get your own domain, hosting, etc, etc... or else no1 will ever care about what you write.

Actually it's easy to get hosting, and put a WP blog on it, but what I'm trying to work out is system of quickly putting together a series of blogs that I'd update every day with 100-200 word articles. If I also have to look after the install, backups etc that reduces my personal effectiveness as I'm finding with proxies.

My interests are quite varied and I'm wanting to throw together blogs that allow me to spend most of my time writing the posts and building backlinks, purely for AdSense, on these blogs I'm less worried about them being part of my portfolio of writing, this is just a way for me to build some sites I own personally and that generate an income with minimal effort.

Never fear, the writing I do on my better sites, and for clients won't suffer.

LOL! Well, I'm not worried about your writing skills (I know I've been slacking lately).

The problem with blogspot is the lack of functionalities, which you don't have with WP or other CMS's.

You can have a really good VPS for $50 per month and host dozens of sites, which means you'll have auto backups, you can get your own auto-update scripts, you can play at will and get the best results for the lowest prices.

On a serious note Andy, you have to spend money to make money, there's no way (imho) you'll be making "real" money in 2 years if you don't invest now, and you bet you wanna start with a decent hosting service.

By using your own domain and merely pointing it at blogger, I think you get away from two of the major downsides to blogger:

1. Branding (who would trust a blog on making money from a publisher who can't afford their own domain?)
2. Building link equity for Google, not for yourself.

You still have to deal with the technical downsides inherent in blogger. These may still include stuff like:

1. No support for trackbacks.
2. No support for multiple blog authors.
3. No support for post categorization.
4. No support for blogrolls.
5. No support for automatically notifying commentors of replies to their comments.

In addition, Google has been known to delete blogger blogs with no warning or recourse.
