An Essential Marketing Principle: Give Before You Try to Get

Once again, DoshDosh has hit the nail on the head. A concept that seems to have completely escaped so many people in this industry is that no one likes to be scammed. It's a tough market in an even tougher economy. You don't have to shower people with gifts to win them over; one of the most powerful tools you can leverage is information.

Here's an excerpt of the DoshDosh blog post:

Because some people still don’t get it. What’s the underlying principle for successful online marketing, selling or networking? The art of giving before you try to get. Before you get something from someone, you need to first give them a reason for them to give it to you.

Too many web entrepreneurs just don't have the patience to utilize long-term strategies.

Moreover, they don't realize that each one of us is our own personal brand -- and the value of those brands goes up or down based upon our words and actions.

I have read an emphasis being made on a similar principle in the book "Spirituality of Success' wherein it clearly conveyed to have the end objective 'of helping people' to eventually see yourself succeed, in any field of your desire!
I guess marketing is no different!

If you're interested in this topic, I highly recommend reading Influence by Robert Cialdini.

One of the main themes of Influence is how marketers use small gifts to manipulate our evolutionary instincts and make us automatically and subconsciously desire to reciprocate by buying their product or service.

It's a good read -- probably one of the best sales and marketing books ever written.
