    Google Search Technology

The Official Google Blog has an occasional series, search quality, which contains information which could be useful to us as SEO's.

Some of the more useful posts in the series:

Official Google Blog: Introduction to Google Search Quality
Official Google Blog: Introduction to Google Ranking
Official Google Blog: Technologies behind Google ranking
Official Google Blog: Search quality, continued
Official Google Blog: Search experiments, large and small
Official Google Blog: Search evaluation at Google

Here is a good white paper written by Amit Singhal, one of the Google Fellows, Modern Information Retrieval: A Brief Overview.

And here is a series of mostly relevant videos, Google Roundtable.

I do appreciate the links you posted Will, although I'd like to know, from your point of view, what is the most important thing we will have to consider when having their search technology in mind?

For me, it's all about reverse engineering it. I need to figure out why things rank and why they don't. Knowing how Google works inside makes it easier to develop an accurate model for deconstruction and analysis.

Like right now I am trying to figure out if I am suffering from over-optimization penalties.

Let me know when you figure that out. I've got a couple sites that rank really well in CPC, but am afraid to touch them. I don't want to get greedy and over do it.

What's odd is they perform really well on the keywords I concentrate on and the payouts are $1-$3/click. But any affiliate based links (which is what was supposed to be the sites bread and butter) never pay out. Either that or its another case of affiliate marketing company f'ing their client... Lord knows I've seen a lot of that.

I'd just expect with Adsense performing so well on such content rich sites, you'd think that what's being sold would sell once and a while.

Could be a number of things, including too much anchor text that's too specific (off page factors) to even some on-page factors. I know I've seen sites get hit that are concentrating on too much specific anchor text: you need links with your brand in them, as well.
