Thread: John Chow is Back in the Google Index

John recently posted John Chow Gives In To Google, Back In Search Engine | John Chow dot Com.

It's nice to see John back in Google's index. It was stupid of Google to make John Chow not rank for "John Chow". I mean seriously, what could be more relevant to a user searching for "John Chow" than John Chow's own blog? duh! Google can be severely retarded at times.

It's a bit sad to see all those people who bought promotion from John Chow lose their investment.

It's also a sad comment on how broken Google's systems and processes are that the only effective way for a site to be unpenalized is to negotiate with Matt Cutts directly through a social contact. This is not a scalable process, nor is it a professional way to run a business. It's amateurish and unprofessional. Google should fix their processes, instead of forcing people to work around them. Matt Cutts is hand editing one of the worlds most important databases -- as favors to his personal friends. That's pathetic. What is this, high school?

Did he not link back for you or something when you link to his John Chow? Or give a away prizes so they said ohhh he is paying or something

It order to beat an 800 pound gorilla you have to be at least a 900 pound gorilla. Relatively speaking, John Chow is probably a 100 pound gorilla. The only reason that he was able to get Matt Cutt's attention was because of his size and blog celebrity status. But he still probably had to bow and and kiss the back of Matt's hand.

Most of us are only 50 pound chimpanzees, and have no hope of beating Google. If you cannot beat them, you join them and play their game.

John will probably make a lot more money now that he is playing the Google game.

Yeah may be he voilated google webmaster's guideline, but aside that seriously! Google somtime act retarted.

If I were Google, I would be ashamed that this news got out. I really wish that someone would come around and just put Google under. That company has too much power, and it shows. I could care less about John Chow and his situation, but the fact that you can just buy your way around the rules says something....Google lacks integrity.

In a way, yes. But taking the analysis up one level, the whole adventure did become an enormous publicity stunt for John.

Taking the analysis to another level, Google showed publicly that they don't care about search relevance -- because JohnChow.com is the vital search result for "John Chow".

Moving the analysis to the top level though, I believe that this event highlights a major weakness in Google's approach to assigning SERPS. Google is publicly admitting that they cannot tell spam from not-spam and asking webmasters to use the nofollow tag to help them do their job. Google is abdicating their responsibility as a search engine and foisting the work onto every webmaster on the Internet. If webmasters refuse to do Google's work for them, Google deindexes their sites. Google is making 4.2B/yr in profit (2007) and they can't manage to focus on their core competency -- search.

As much as Google hurt John, I think Google has hurt themselves far worse.
