It's weird how MSNBC copies a newspapers story, rewrites it (poorly), and doesn't even link to the original story.

I original article (Driver fills tank in Richland, drains bank - Mid-Columbia News | Tri-City Herald : Mid-Columbia news) has a much less politically correct quote:
"Somebody from a foreign country who spoke in broken English argued with me for 10 to 15 minutes," Zamora said. " 'Did you get the gas?' he asked. Like I had to prove that I didn't pump $81,400,836,908 in gas!"

I wouldn't be surprised if it is true about the said customer services' argument. With some companies it can be moronic at best.

Paypal are horrible, but they are widely used for payments on the internet, most people have it and use it.

Because of paypals stupidness I lost over $500 to them becuase of a scammer. I gave them all the evidence that they would need to see that he scammed me, but they still ruled against me.

I hate them every living day for that, as that put me in debt for a few months. But I have to use them, they are widely used and no alternatives as popular just yet.

    haha funny stuff
you never know though, it might all be 100% fictional.

I did lose some $2k to paypal scams some 3 years ago, but that single experience was enough for me, haven't had any recent troubles with paypal for now.

Paypal does have many disadvantages, but there is just no alternative, so unless you want to lose like 90% of your business (if you sell stuff online) not much to do about this

I use them but at the back of my mind is the fact that they are (apparently) a merchant bank, which (apparently) means they have fewer obligations to customers than a 'regular' bank. Can someone clarify this?

Funds stored in your PayPal account are, by default, stored in a Money Market account. This is not FDIC insured.

You can tell PayPal to store your funds in an FDIC insured bank account. However, that will only protect you against a failure of the bank PayPal uses -- not against a failure of PayPal.

Of course, none of these risks seem as likely as PayPal's routine confiscation of funds from customer accounts.

One place where I can say PayPal truly shines is in the instant email notifications and updates of transactions. That said, I was at the hardware store yesterday purchasing a 10mm 12 point 3/8" drive socket. It was a mere $2.37. However, the credit card auth was taking forever. Unfortunately I had no cash with me, otherwise I would never had used the card for such a small amount.

After several errors and about 5 minutes the transaction finally went through. I only swiped the card once, but the transaction processed three times in a row. I found out by checking my iPhone right there at the register as the clerk handed me my receipt.

This is not the first time its happened, so its really nice to see that instant notification when a problem like that occurs so you can let the merchant know about the problem right then and there.

Luckily this has only ever happened on small purchases. I'd hat to see this happen on a $1000 or more purchase.... It takes a while for this to rectify, so in the mean time, you are out the cash.
