    Strategic Question

Ok, this is a tough one, at least for me...

Imagine you run a successful site like whateverexample12345.com and the .net and other tld's are available.

    What's the best option:

1 - Register those (.net and .org at least) to protect your business (redirecting the traffic) - Cheap
2 - Develop similar sites with unique content on the other TLD's - Not Cheap

I've never really thought of the dilemma, if you have a successful site though, and if it has good traffic and backlinks, what would be the point of also owning the other TLDs?

I can certainly understand protecting a brand, but how does it benefit you to divert your energies away from continuing to build one site and instead build a new site on the other TLD?

I would buy up the tlds and forward them to the main site.

If you have a great site idea / domain name and you want to protect it, that's what I would prefer to do as well, and develop them into something when you get the time.

Where you might consider the other tld's of your domain useless or worthless, there are domain squatters and typo squatters who love to find those tasty available domains they can squeeze a little bit of traffic or value out of.

Yes, you're right, but on the other hand you can get a lot of links from the original .com site and cross profit from the "mixed TLD" usage.

I wonder what the traffic for tech-faq.net and .org is

Someone on that other forum that starts with a "D" has one of those. They asked once if they would have any problems making a proxy listing site on it. Looking at the alexa on those the .org seems to get some traffic.

Though buying them up wouldnt be for traffic but to protect your branding. You could make it a one off name something like jeep then copyright the word and then do as G does and take away all the domains from people instead of buying them

    Thx!

Well, hand reggin' the names is not hard as $7 per year * 2 is nothing compared to the yearly income.

  8. I like what vBulletin and Wordpress have done to differentiate their .com and .org domains.

But, you don't need the same domain to get the benefits of building cross-linked domains. Some of the more authoritative sites are building related niche sites and making them authoritative with massive linking from the main domain.

I never bought tech-faq.net or tech-faq.org, probably because I was never in love with the tech-faq domain name. For a new project I recently started, I bought all three domain named right in the beginning.
