Very bad experience with freelance programmer ....

Month ago i hire UK coder for my project (customize my wordpress + some extra script), but he some how convince me convert to custom CMS, i agree .....
He request 50% upfront and 50% complete, but i prefer another way, so we break the job to two part (1/3 n 2/3) n 3 part payment, i pay upfront for 1/3. when he finish 1/3 then we continue on second part and i pay another 1/3 .... basically he get more then 50% before complete and i pay less for start up ......

He promise me first part should be finish in 7 day but until now is 21 day, nothing send to me yet other then some code (which i'm not sure is working or not, but very sure is not main source) .......
I try to communicate with him, talk to him everyday, but he just blame coding ain't easy n bla, everyday ask me to wait, he will show me something in next few hour, but fail every time until three day ago, he show me something that run on his server (yes this is what i want + some bug fixing), i don't have trust with him anymore, so i asked him to upload everything to my server for me to inspect the code and verify it ..... but it take him two day still can't upload anything ....

When i request refund (14day), he said he spend a lot time doing it, he won't refund me anything, but on our agreement, i should have first part script running, not some code which can't run, he told me his hourly rate is 45 dollar, he already spend more then that on it .... but my script just ain't work .....

Is not only money lose, worst my time too, i have to stay awake (he on GMT1 and i'm GMT+8), yes awake for last 21 day, everyday he sure have some minor question to ask, if i can't reply him on the time, he find him self another excuse to delay for another day ....

I suggest to tell him again that you want what he has done so far installed on your server. Otherwise start looking for a new programmer. One thing that I suggest is that you run a pilot project before getting to the big work.

After being that far over schedule, I think you're better off cutting your losses now. You may not get the money back you've put out but at least you won't be wasting more time and money with this guy. He probably talked you into the custom CMS because he didn't know WordPress but it doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing in general.

I know you're out some money, but how much money are you losing when you consider the time you're wasting?

    I agree with TinaGolden.

I agree with TinaGolden as well. Though it would be good to get the source on the server. Perhaps another coder can fix it.

Agreed, you should cut losses. I've been through this so many times, and believe me, you will regret every single day you continued "working" with this lazy piece of dishonest guy, who considers himself a programmer. $45 an hour? What a joke. These people should work for Mcdonalds, not for serious customers who pay them big money.

This is the part you should forget. A talented programmer will do the same job from scratch in less time than fixing other peoples crap. If the code is not well written, not commented, which is the case in most of the time, then the time invested in fixing can be multiple times more than creating something from scratch. It's painful, but it's true.

True. Most programmers prefer to write code from scratch. But a good coder will understand how to fix it. It's still will be hit or miss whether it will work though. I've seen Ukrainian coders advertising to work for $5 per hour. You never know.

If you used PayPal to pay him, file a complaint with PayPal to get your money back. PayPal sides with the buyer almost 100% of the time--especially if it is for a service.

If you used a different payment service you might just have to lick your wounds and look for a qualified programmer to finish your project.

Yes, you can find programmers at $5 per hour, but I think most of them would be kids that are just about to graduate from university with very little real life work experience. If they are though into the programming language you need, and are enthusiasts, then it could work... The minimum I paid was $10 / hour, the maximum was 100 Euro / hour (which is shockingly high imo, but it was important).
