    NetBuilder Communities

You're all looking at my main online community.

What online communities are you building?

How are they going? What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

    Well i have a proxy community @ webevader.org ( forums.webevader.org )

At only a month old ( or less ) it is doing very well

The main problems that i have encountered are :

Getting members... This has been the biggest problem But luckily the current members are posting a lot.

Keeping it active - As proxy forums go they are usually really inactive and will normally withering and die because of it. But i have noticed that as long as i keep on posting so will others so

Thats it so far... i will keep you all updated if something new happens

I have two different communities, MyBB Studios and Discuss Proxy. These are two different types of communities, though both are forums.

MyBB Studios - This is my 'resource community', where I offer MyBB skins and support for $5/year. I used to run another of these resource communities called Forum Promotion where I offered free advertising, posts, and reviews.

The thing with 'resource communities' is that you need to be able to constantly offer your service. If I charge people $5 for access to my themes, they expect me to make new ones. If I offer services, I am expected to do them. And as your forums get more popular, you will need to spend more and more time. Just remember that before you start one of these.

Discuss Proxy - This is a 'discussion community,' where people discuss proxies and monetization and what not. The difference is that I don't need to provide any services. These are a little harder to get members to, since they have less motives to join.

You need to keep constantly posting to keep the discussions going, so people have a reason to post. Contests, promotions, and stuff are good ways to start up a community. You need to stay active.

As it gets more popular though, you can slowly back away. The goal in the end is to let the community run itself. Of course you don't want to become a DigitalPoint where you disappear altogether

    -------

I also want to mention that if you are starting a community to earn money, just stop. Turn off your computer. Go take a mile hike. Monetizing a forum is the hardest thing you will ever do. The only forums that make decent money (mainly through Google ads) are the extremely popular ones). Forum visitors are there to read forum topics, they don't usually go to find information and leave, like an ad-clicking visitor would do.

Also, a good skin, decent forums, and a friendly attitude always help

I have my local football forum. Been around since 2005. It was hacked three times in the past. So the new forum was online since last year, and now have 1500+ members. I hope to reach 2000 members by end of the year.

We did some advertising while at a regional football tournament last November. Around 20 members participated. We created a huge banner and display it opposite the grandstand for all to see. A few of us also distribute flyers around the gallery where we were seated. So, I think that helps to boost up the forum membership last year.

Last year, it earns me a total of SGD$3000 from advertisers. I hope to release the new forum skin by next week and start accepting advertising again.

I am trying to make 4 communities at the moment. They are all in the petbetter.com network I am working on (if you want see my sig).

So far things are pretty crap however I have started investing some money into it this month. I am going to get all the sites redesigned (just the quality of the images fixed up). I have started waking up at 4am every morning to keep adding content.

At the moment they are not technically communities but for the next two months I will continue to focus on content followed by another month where content will still be high priority but I will add a forum for each site and some other features. I will then start to invest a large amount of money and slowly start building links very aggressively.

    Any tips or suggestions?

Currently, I have >>Wabuforum<< - Powered by vBulletin - which is my general arts forum. The major challenge I face is that general arts isn't exactly SEO friendly and that it'll be extremely hard to compete with Gingerbox Forums, Wet Canvas, etc. I do plan on doing some serious work though.

Another community which isn't built just yet will be winninggamer.com which currently nothing is at, but I plan on developing a gaming site with cheat codes and the walkthroughs i write along with those whom I request.

I only have one. Don't make a forum for each and every pet. You mentioned four communities. Trying to manage four separate communities, all starting simultaneously, would be an impossible task. Create one large community with a section for cats, a section for fish, etc, etc. This'll get you the best results, in my opinion.
