How important do you think it is? I think it's vital, if no one is welcomed into the community then it will create bad first impressions for the user.

This is the biggest part of a forum. If new members arn't greeted, they won't return.
I think its a good thing to do it but on our site we like members to introduce them selves to teh forum then other members welcome them,
What we tend to do is send new members a provate message welcoming them to the forum
I think that is the first step in inviting members to the community, and they are more likely to stay.

I agree. On Chatting Time, I always make it a point to step in and welcome a new member to the community. After they create an intro thread, that is.
I always welcome new members.
I think I must have welcomed everyone on AC so far. :P
I welcome all the members to the board, well I don't, the phpBB3 post bot does :P But its in my name though and saves me a bit of time.
I think i have an article on this i will put it up later, but welcoming members is extremely important.

I agree for me its tells me that the forum is inactive.
This is possibly the most important thing to do.
You should welcome every member so they know they are part of the community.
