Successful communities with alternative forum software
Most people who start and run communities probably run vBulletin, PHPBB, IPB or something like MyBB, all of which follow a rather typical and very recognizable look and feel and function. In recent years, however, there have been forum software which depart from these norms. They tend to be simpler, slimmer and a little more flexible. They often don't look like your typical board.
Examples are Drupal forums, Vanilla, BBPress for Wordpress, FluxBB and similar. Anyone runs a successful community on one of those kinds of software?
Part of the reason I ask is because I remember it used to be that people were kind of turned off of forums which don't look like a PHPBB clone. It didn't feel like a real forum for them I suppose, and I kinda understand. But after Facebook, and the kind of interface they have for discussions maybe people are a lot more open to forums which look and feel a lot differently. What do you think?
