If you ever install a MyBB plugin, you'll realize why.

Oh, I know. I've done a lot of ridiculous file edits on IPB 2.3. It's just that file edits are usually the least reliable way to install a mod.
I don't really like SMF that much.
Forumotion is terrible. That's my final word.

i like smf actually as it has lots of plugins like wordpress.
almost what you need to moderate a forum is in smf. its opensource cms.
I have tried vBulletin, phpBB, MyBB, SMF.
I found MyBB the worst among these. I have heard wowBB and punBB are bad too.
From my personal experience I can say this:
vBulletin is no doubt the best.
If you want free software then phpBB is the best. In the beginning it might seem tough to add mods in phpBB, but once you get accustomed, it'll be all fine. Its actually just time consuming, nothing much difficult.
MyBB and SMF are very easy to use, but phpBB is way better in the long run.
And if you can spend money, then go for vBulletin.
I don't get your problems with MyBB. I mean, I remember the days where I was installing the ibProBattle mod for IPB 2.3, which had almost as many file edits as a phpBB forum. I ended up crashing the forums 1/3 of the time. What really gets me is not editing it the first time, but editing it when you have to upgrade. That's a killer. phpBB has always really been catching up at best (Quick Reply is the best example, but RSS feeds are as well), and a lot of MODs today are on by default on other forum software.
