Duplicate Content and Multiple sites Issues - From Google Staff

If you have issues with duplicate contents then you should watch this vid.

The guy does raise some interesting scenarios in this video. It is worth watching.

I still find it interesting that Google continues to stress that duplicate content does not result in a penalty; they just filter out the pages with duplicate content. While technically this is correct (it's a filter, not a penalty), it still smells like a penalty for the duplicate content pages.

I also find it interesting that Google is starting to use several people other than Matt Cutts in their videos. Perhaps they are looking for the next Matt Cutts protege.

Yeah thanks for posting this. Learned very much about canonical link in the <head> and finnaly understand what its about as he explains about 7 minutes into the video. Canonical link is really useful when your dealing with mod_rewrite in .htaccess where you end up having two URLs to your page, (One being from the mod_rewrite and the other from the normal query url) As an added bonus if your on a windows server you also the special privilege of having case-insensitivity too to allow endless possibilities of urls to your page.

I think of this as a penalty, you don't know what page will be filtered.

It's not a penalty. Not all duplicate content gets filtered out. But yeah it can be a problem when other sites are copying your content or you can't control which page gets indexed.
