    Is Grammar Important Online?

Do you think grammar is important online? Why or why not?

Yes - grammar is like valid HTML/CSS when it comes to content. It helps the reader better understand your message, just as valid code helps the reader understand the way your design is supposed to work. The better your grammar, the clearer your message will be at base. Then you can build a writing style on top of that.

Correct grammar is extremely important. Bad grammar ruins the first impression of a reader.

Also, if you put in hard work into your research etc. chances are the bad grammar will ruin it completely.

It depends on which type of grammar you're talking about.

The use of and interchangeably with a comma has been pretty much accepted, but basic grammar is a sign of intelligence or at the least - Not Lacking In It

    <quick literary technique lesson>

And is not interchangeable with commas That's actually a literary technique called "asyndeton" that is used to make your content seem as though it is long and loosing grip.

In contrast, over-usage of and is called "polysyndeton" and is used to make it feel as though there are a lot of important things to remember.

The over-usage of these is just poor grammar though. Well, you can use "and" but you need commas to join to full sentences together.

    </ quick literary technique lesson>

When I say grammar I mean real, literary, understandable English grammar. Or even the grammar found in other languages.

(I don't know any other languages well except Spanish, perhaps, and I don't read any Spanish blogs...)

I mean constructing sentences in a logical way with correct usage of tenses, punctuation, conjunctions, contractions, etc. I also mean not making up words or changing their functions...

"Killer" is not an adjective. It's a noun. "Creative" is not a noun. It's an adjective. I'm fine with using slang online (you might notice I say "wicked" a lot) but I'd prefer if we didn't coin them as terms...

I'm talking about content that is rock-solid in the same way a W3C Compliant design is rock-solid.

That's not only a problem at DP. Here at NB, I am quite frustrated that I cannot convince a few members to improve the spelling, grammar, and punctuation in their posts.

I regularly delete posts that are so poorly constructed as to be unreadable. If a person can't take the time to write a decent post, no one should be expected to take the time to read their post.

Communication is not what you know, but what others understand.

If you are able to do that, you don't have to worry about the Grammar and Spelling.

Of course, I understand what the poorly constructed sentences are.
I do have a hard time reading some posts made by fellow members.

That's because this is Internet and people from all around the globe use it.

Now, why do people who can't even type proper English sentences visit these sites ???

That is because , this is where the actual money is.
This is why people living in Kuala lampur - Malaysia, Addis Abbaba - Ethiopia , Buenos Aires - Argentina , and Poonjab - India are running sites targeting US/UK/Can/Europe.

The simple fact is that you can't blame them. You should learn to tolerate them. Have fun reading their posts.

I never said I blamed them, but why do I need to tolerate quality so low as to be impossible to understand? If you come to English sites, especially to do business with English speaking peoples, I strongly believe that you should know how to construct a readable sentence.
