Thread: How can I Improve my Content?

Hey,

I really want to become a better writer. Can any of you look at my work on Web Journey and tell me how to make it better?

Corey has been really helpful and has told me to improve structure. What else can I improve?

Also on a scale of one to ten what do you think of my writing. Please be hard on me; I know I am not the best writer, but I want to become better.

I think you should read Daily Writing Tips and other such blogs. It will help you.

Your tone is just tooo informal I feel (being conversational is good but there are limits).

Asking for help is the first step. The second step is going to your local bookstore and buying books. Whatever book you want, really. I personally love fantasy books.

See, reading books helps you (subconsciously!) understand how words go together, and it improves your spelling. So read as much as possible. Printed materials. You could even read magazines if you want.

I'd give your content about a 5/10 right now. It's understandable, but average. Even though you put a lot of effort into it, you also circle talk quite a bit. Here are some "quick tips" for you to follow:

Complete an idea and move on. Also, make sure to use whole thoughts. In fact, try to include one concept in sentences before moving onto the next sentence. It's important to get across a sinle topic and then move to the next topic.

Use long sentences. Short ones bug readers. I promise it's true. Long sentences are helpful. Let me explain why. Long sentences add depth. They make content flow. Use long sentences.

I do read often (I try to read a new novel every week). However, it seems that I need to work on learning about the structure of non-fiction.

Okay, I am going to work on outlining my posts. I will write the post that I am working on in the paragraph. Then I will only write about that point.

Hm, what is the best amount of words to use in a sentence? Is 15 or 20 good?

I think 15-20 is toooo much. Try and keep stuff short and sweet, people hate reading too much. Get to the point as quickly as you can.

As many words as it takes to get the point across? You can't write thinking "how many words should I use in this sentence?" You just...write the sentence.

The reasons I asked that is because you said I needed to write longer sentences.

Yes you do. But there isn't a set amount of words. Just try including conjunctions and expressing more complex thoughts.

Okay, what do you think my number one problem is?

A lot of writers have the same problem: Their sentences are way too long! You have kind of the problem that does a complete different thing, your sentences are too short.

I'm not sure whether you're a native English speaker or not, but think about it in your own language and read your text. Everytime you take a little breath, stop the sentence (ofcourse there are limits). And everytime you need to take a breath, put a comma (ofcourse there are limits in this too). But this is easier how it should work.

On your blog I don't like this: Great Blogs I visit Daily
The reason is simple, it's cool that you visit other blogs -- But the Great Blog that people should visit is YOUR BLOG, not other peoples' blog

It's nice to see list when there is a good post with different points of view, that's something nice and you should implement it more if there are a lot of things to talk about.
