Let's say that I want to sell products or services to people in the widget industry. One proven effective method of selling is direct mail to super targeted mailing lists -- both email and paper mail.

I would start the "Widget Industry Directory." Submission to that directory would require the submitted to enter their email address and physical mail address. If I was agressive enough to do telemarketing, it would also require a telephone number.

Using physical mail may help to work around the issue where directory submission services use temporary spambucket email addresses for directory submissions. People tend to be honest about the physical mailing addresses of their companies -- particularly if you incorporate maps into your directory.

Mia, what do you think about this strategy?
I really like this strategy Will. You can always require email validation when people submit in order to approve their link. If you ever wanted to write an article for phpLD about setting up a successful niche directory, I would love to publish it.

    Thanks for the great ideas.

Oh, and we are working on doing a lot more with maps and regional directories now.

As all of us have seen google cracking down some big directories for whatever reasons.

1)- Do you guys still think creating directories could be profitable?

2)- If yes, then creating one directory and working on it like crazy would do the job or you suggest creating a directory network?

3)- Or do you think Creating directories and expecting good money is just waste of the time.

I would really appreciate some good answers along with proper explanation.
    5starpix - says

IMO it is saturated, I still make money since it is directed towards a specific niche.

I agree with this statement but should see what we can do according to the specific needs of each individual.

I think that it is definitely cost-effective if it is not the only segment of your on-line job. I have only one local directory (croatian language) and it is environmentally friendly but very weak. Currently build a network of tourist sites about 10 domains and the economic aspect 4-5 directory are certainly a long term effective only through this project. Of course, not the local language.
Anything else can only be plus, I am most in doubt of Google ads, I never used them. Question, to build its own network or use Google ads to me is the biggest unknown. I still think that I will have to decide on a combination of.
Only from one reason, I did not reliably tested. I do not believe that Google also looks at its clients as to the rest who are not directly. Google is a commercial company, it would be quite normal.

Yeah could be, but looks to me more like he's writing his posts in another language and then using machine translation before posting.
